Ocean’s 8, spin off of the classic Ocean’s 11 franchise, has finally revealed the full lineup of actresses in talks for deals to star in the movie. There have been many rumors throughout the past year about potential candidates for the reboot, but nothing has been set in stone until today. Deadline originally reported that Warner Bros. is close to officially signing Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, and Awkwafina (real name Nora Lum).
While this is no official confirmation, that is an absolutely stacked lineup of ladies who would be as exciting to watch as the Ocean’s 11 cast was. Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s 11 director) is producing the film while Olivia Milch has penned the script. Ocean’s 11 originally came out in 1960 and starred Rat Pack members Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.. The series was rebooted in 2001 with a star studded cast that included George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, Bernie Mac, Elliott Gould, Scott Caan, Carl Reiner, Andy Garcia, Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Shaobo Qin.
The Ocean’s Trilogy was a massive success while bringing a ton of fun to the heist genre. The idea for a gender reversed reboot follows the trend of movies like Ghostbusters by bringing a fresh unique take to an older franchise. Ocean’s 8 is something exciting that should work as well as, if not better than, the original films. If Warner Bros. was able to lock down all of these ladies it would set up for a pretty promising movie in the future. Although it’s only been about a decade since the last Ocean’s movie hit theaters, a reboot would be gladly accepted with this fresh take on the idea. Hopefully there will be official confirmation of the casting details soon and the project can really begin to move forward.
