“The Meg” Can’t Possibly Be Good Can It? Why We’ll Watch it Anyway

The Meg doesn’t seem like it would one of those films that could top anything that’s come before it, but there’s always a chance so we’ll probably go and see it anyway. If nothing else it’s a chance to see a REALLY BIG shark do something that you would imagine it should have done a long time ago, which is wake to terrorize an entire ocean filled with potential prey. The megalodon, a prehistoric shark that measures 70 feet from snout to tail, is one of the biggest, most scary things that might occupy any part of the wide open ocean since if you think about it, sharks are apex predators and don’t have a whole lot of enemies.

Also, this isn’t something the hero can just dropkick or attach some explosive to and kill with ease. Being 70 feet in length means that it’s girth is going to be just massive. In the picture above that’s not much of an exaggeration if it is at all. The mouth of a megalodon could very possibly open wide enough to swallow a couple of surfers whole, board and all. And yet Jason Statham is going to play a Navy diver that takes this thing on in its element. That could be why it’s already not that believable, but it could also be why we’ll watch it, just to see what happens. After all, shark movies are something of an obsession with people since they can be a lot of fun and are usually gory just for the sake of the gore. Something like The Meg though sparks something in people’s minds as to why the giant shark wouldn’t have come awake a lot sooner and been a bigger problem in the past.

After all for what we know about sharks they don’t perceive time in the same way as humans generally are always on the go, only resting every now and again to recharge before going on the hunt once more. Something this big seems like it would have to keep eating in order to maintain the kind of energy it would need to move about, so where was it for so long? There are a lot of questions that the movie is already bringing up but the hope is that they’ll all be answered when the time comes. The movie is coming out this August, and the trailer is set to hit this coming Monday, April 9th. Perhaps there’s something in there that the old rumor mills will be able to start grinding away at in order to give a better explanation of why this movie was even worth considering as a summer hopeful.

Shark movies have kind of fallen short of the bar that was set by Jaws back in the day, but they’re entirely subjective since some folks happen to like them no matter how bad they get, while others just roll their eyes and walk away without bothering. This one however has the distinction of being about the biggest shark ever recorded in history, so it might be worth a look.
