In an interview with The Glass Magazine, Schilling explained how she got into acting and whether it has been her passion, saying: “It has. It happened in a little bit of a roundabout way where I had no after-school activities but there was a school play where every kid that auditioned got in. I had nothing to do and my mother said, “You need to get an activity”, so I auditioned for the school play. Then I played Tzeitel in Fiddler on the Roof when I was 11, and that’s how it all began. I remember walking home from that audition and I just remember thinking, “Oh, that’s what I want to do with my life. That’s it, there it is”. Quite simple. I never really deviated.”

In an interview with Authority Magazine, Shaw talked about how he decided to pursue a career in acting while studying at UCLA: “While I was in college at UCLA, I would spend my summers out in Hawaii taking classes and working; really as a function of running away from my directionless life here in LA. One summer I happened to come across a job where I worked on the set of a TV show doing everything from light stunt work to being in the background of scenes. It was the most fun I ever had working. I was mesmerized by the behind the scenes machinery of television. I remember looking around, and thinking,… “all of these people do this for a living,” from grips, to actors, to wardrobe. They rig lights, play dress up, and eat free food. I thought, “well, maybe there is something here.”
