If you were born before the 90’s you might not understand how anyone could think that the Tony Harding and Nancy Kerrigan story was made up, but Margot Robbie certainly did. It sounds as though it had more to do with the strange nature of Harding’s life up to that point and the unexpected nature of the attack than anything though. Robbie was more aghast and disbelieving of the fact that such a thing had actually happened than anything. At least she didn’t go on record by stating that she couldn’t believe it wasn’t made up, now that would have been something for the media to chew on for a while.
It’s understandable though since in 1994 Robbie was only 4 years old and wouldn’t have cared much about the incident except maybe to ask why someone would be so mean. It was believed that Tonya Harding had everything to do with the clubbing of Kerrigan’s knee at the time but she was thankfully found innocent of that charge. Instead her ex-husband Jeff Gillooly and Shawn Eckhardt were found guilty of hiring the man that almost put Kerrigan out of the Olympics. She came back revitalized and won the silver medal while Harding placed eighth, but that controversy has hung over her head ever since.
Apparently Margot and Tonya have gotten pretty chummy and were even seen at the premier of I, Tonya together. It might be a good thing since one wouldn’t want any hard feelings between the actress portraying the real person and the actual person. That could lead to a giant mess that would be hard to sort out. But thankfully things are downright friendly between the two so far as anyone can see.
Anyone remember when this happened? The images of Nancy Kerrigan sitting on the ground holding her knee while screaming “Why?” haven’t left my head in all that time. Her knee healed up and she went on to compete which means that the guy Gillooly and Eckhardt hired didn’t really know what he was doing, thank goodness, or was possibly someone that just needed a payday. Honestly, and it sounds horrible, but if the two men had hired someone that was really knowledgeable about dishing out the kind of pain that they seemed to want then Kerrigan might not have been able to use her legs for a long time to come. A lot of damage can be done with a police baton but what she endured, albeit painful and horrible, was nothing compared to what could have happened.
As a result of the incident Tonya Harding went on to greater notoriety that wasn’t really what was desired but was still enough to keep her in the public eye for a while to come. Her ex-husband and Eckhardt kind of faded out save for a few references here and there, but Tonya is still going strong. Her story isn’t exactly that of a triumph but it is something that people are going to pay to see.
