A new record has been set on Rotten Tomatoes. Formerly, ‘Toy Story 2′ held the record for the most reviews while maintaining a 100 percent score as it had a total of 163 reviews. ‘Lady Bird’ has now broken this record with 168 reviews and now holds the title of the most reviewed film with a 100 percent score. In addition to this honor, the positive reviews written about the film mean it is also on the Rotten Tomatoes Top Movies list. It is currently sitting in 52nd position between ‘Alien’ and ‘The Philadelphia Story’.
Rotten Tomatoes works on a scale where reviews are either ‘Rotten’ or ‘Fresh’. So far, all 168 reviews are ‘Fresh’ and nobody has written a review at the other end of the scale for ‘Rotten’. It is not only on Rotten Tomatoes that this film is a big hit as audiences have also highly praised the movie and it has become the top limited opening of 2017.
‘Lady Bird’ is a comedy-drama film that is written and directed by Greta Gerwig. It took her a year to write the screenplay and although it is not biographical, there are elements of the storyline that she can relate to her own experiences. It is a coming-of-age film about the turbulent relationship between a high school senior and her mother.
Saoirse Ronan plays the lead role of Christine ‘Lady Bird’ McPherson who is a senior student at a Sacramento Catholic high school. Laurie Metcalf plays her mother while Tracy Letts is in the role of her father. Others who star in this movie include Lucas Hedges, Timothée Chalamet, Beanie Feldstein, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Lois Smith, Laura Marano, and Jordan Rodrigues.
Speaking of the film’s success, Ronan has expressed her surprise at receiving such a positive reception. As the movie was made on a low budget of $10 million, she had not expected it to break records for positive reviews. The fact that the teenage theme of the film got such a positive reception has also taken her by surprise.
This film could also be another step forward in the already successful career of Saoirse Ronan. She already has an impressive list of film credits even though she is still only in her early twenties. She has been nominated for numerous awards for her performances and of these, she has won many. Some of her best work was in the films ‘Brooklyn’, ‘Atonement’, ‘Hana’, and ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’. She has already won the ‘Gotham Independent Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in ‘Lady Bird’ and has the potential to earn many more.
‘Lady Bird’ premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on September 1, 2017, and then had a limited theatrical release on November 3, 2017, in the United States. Its wider release was on November 24, 2017. From its $10 million budget, the film has already grossed $10. 7 million and has the potential to make much more as this film is new to most theaters. Only time will tell if the film is as commercially successful as it is critically successful.
