Extreme Barbie Jeep racing is a thing. Let that sink in for just a moment before I go on. Now that it’s wedged firmly in your conscious mind let me say that this has to be southern thing. For one thing I saw a confederate flag waving off of one of the cars and few if any people in any other region of the US are going to fly those so proudly as they would in the south, at least at the time of this video. Plus, if you’ve ever watched clips from different regions of the country and noticed the difference in how the people have fun and enjoy their recreational time then you would notice that in the south they tend to let their fun revolve around cars an awful lot. It’s not a bad thing or meant to be negative in any way, it’s simply a noticeable fact that the southern states do tend to enjoy their motor sports quite a bit and as a result tend to focus upon gearing their sports towards one type of automobile or another.
This however seems a bit, well, silly. I’ll say that with an add-on that it looks kind of fun except for the part where the riders go careening into one another, down the hill, over the front of their cars, and hardly ever seem able to navigate the hills they’ve chosen to fall down. I say fall because a lot of them don’t do much more than roll for a dozen yards or so before the car gives out on them or they overbalance somehow. My only hope is that the cars they’re using have been long forgotten by the kids that used them or are cast offs that are simply being given a different purpose. It’d be a sad day if a little girl or boy were shown what was left of their big wheels after a day spent at the downhill races.
I don’t think that’s the case however since these things get pretty beat up and the drivers don’t seem to much care that they get torn apart. This is the south man, ingenuity is part of the game. I’m only surprised that they don’t allow these things to be upgraded and made to withstand that tumble down the hill. This is probably one of the purest sports around, but I’ll use the word ‘sport’ sparingly because unless a person can actually reach the bottom of the hill there’s not a lot of skill involved with settling down on a big hunk of plastic and trusting to fate and the terrain that you’ll be able to remain standing by the time you reach the bottom.
In reality this kind of thing is more of an amusement than a sport. It’s obvious that people are having a good time watching these drivers go banging down the hill to the adulation of the crowd, but otherwise it looks like a giant bloopers reel with only a few glimmers of actual skill laced in there to give it some credibility. Give the drivers credit though, they’re all wearing helmets, which is a good idea if you watch and see some of the tumbles they take.
