What We Know about Ang Lee’s Gemini Man so Far

There are films that are pitched years in advance that never get past the front office and lay sitting on the desks of agents, directors, and studio executives for years. Gemini Man is one of those many films that has yet to see the big screen despite the fact that it does have an interesting plot line and a capacity for character development that audiences seem to love. The biggest problem with any film of any time comes when deciding on how to portray the characters and whether or not the special effects, when needed, are going to be enough to make the film into the epic design that the director and producers want. Gemini Man is going to be coming the to big screen eventually, it’s just a matter of getting the film done and then out to the public.

So what else is going on with the film as of now?

It’s going to be starring Will Smith.

Smith is going to play an assassin that is simply getting too old for the job. As can be predicted his bosses will come up with a plan to replace him with a younger version. However, they will seek to clone him in order to make certain they don’t lose him entirely. The first order for the clone will be to take out the older version, something that the original will likely have a big problem with. You can almost hear the one-liners and quips from Will Smith now on how it’s going to go down.

It’s long overdue.

This film has been sitting around for the past 20 years, so it’s definitely in need of production. Up until now the technology needed to facilitate a fight between the main hero and a copy of himself wasn’t quite ready. But with the advent of Logan and Looper the idea of the young self fighting the old has spurred a great deal of technological advances that are now capable of making such a fight happen. Gemini Man is an idea that has been long in the making and should be a finely tuned hit once it hits theaters.

It wasn’t given much thought until Ang Lee and Will Smith were tapped for it.

Ang Lee has really been into more drama lately than action. But his work on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon proves that he can handle an action sequence. Will Smith is one of the many stars that has been Hollywood gold when it comes to action and should easily be able to take on such a role. His acting resume includes a long list of action films that weren’t always considered great but were almost always considered to be fine examples of his acting capabilities. Together these two should be able to pull of a hit film that will leave execs wondering why they didn’t get this ball rolling sooner.

Despite being on the shelf for so long Gemini Man should be in theaters as of 2019. With Smith and Lee working diligently on bringing it up to code there’s a lot of hope that it will be the epic film that it was supposed to be 20 years ago.
