Adepo’s character was the son of John Murphy (Kevin Carroll) and Erika Murphy (Regina King). The Murphy family is the central focus of 

The Leftovers season 2, as the series shifts from the fictionalized version of New York’s Mapleton town to the fictional town of Jarden, Texas. While Adepo’s character is an aspiring pastor, his father is the town’s chief firefighter and vigilante. His mother, Erika Murphy, is the town’s doctor. Their youngest child and daughter, Evangeline “Evie” Murphy (Jasmin Savoy Brown), who’s also Michael’s twin, is a high school student with epilepsy.

Fences (2016)

With the success of the Denzel Washington-directed 2016 period drama Fences, it was the first film audiences saw Jovan Adepo. The movie was adapted from August Wilson’s 1985 Pulitzer Prize-winning play and was a critical and commercial success. Jovan Adepo, cast in a supporting role, portrayed Cory Maxson, the son of Troy Maxson (Washington) and Rose Lee Maxson (Viola Davis). 

Fences was Adepo’s film debut, and the only cast member who did not star in the 2010 Broadway revival play. Fences is one of Jovan Adepo’s most prominent movie and TV roles of his career. Impressively, with his film debut, Jovan Adepo received accolades for his performance. At the 2017 Black Reel Awards, Adepo received two nominations for Outstanding Breakthrough Performance and Outstanding Supporting Actor.

Facebook Watch audiences would remember Jovan Adepo from the drama series Sorry for Your Loss. Co-starring alongside Elizabeth Olsen, Kelly Marie Tran, Mamoudou Athie, and Janet McTeer. As one of the series’ main cast, Adepo played Danny Greer, brother to the deceased Matt Greer (Mamoudou Athie). His character was also the brother-in-law of Leigh Shaw (Elizabeth Olsen). Sorry For Your Loss aired for 2 seasons before it was canceled. Although canceled, Sorry For Your Loss has a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Jack Ryan (2019)

Jovan Adepo was also a familiar face on Amazon Prime Video’s Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan TV series. Adepo’s character was introduced in Jack Ryan season 2 as Marcus Bishop. The character was a retired U.S. Navy Special Warfare Combatant-Craft crewman. Now a boat repairman, he returns home to find Matice (John Hoogenakker) with his grandmother. Although initially refusing Matice’s offer several times, he agrees to join the mission.

The Stand (2020-2021)

The Stand was Jovan Adepo’s second post-apocalyptic project on television after The Leftovers. The miniseries was based on Stephen King’s 1978 novel and cast Adepo as Larry Underwood. The character is introduced as a narcissistic singer-songwriter. Underwood is one of the main characters in the novel and miniseries. With the popularity of the novel and miniseries, The Stand is one of Jovan Adepo’s top movie and TV roles.

Babylon (2022)

Looking past its box-office bomb numbers, Jovan Adepo was also part of the star-studded cast of Babylon (2022). Adepo played the American jazz trumpeter Sidney Palmer. Adepo starred alongside Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Jean Smart, Tobey Maguire, and Olivia Wilde. As part of the top cast, Adepo was also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Award.
