So far from what we can tell and so far as George Simpson of Express and many others can corroborate is that Thor 4 will happen if Chris Hemsworth sees a worthy script that can catch the eye and instill the kind of faith that it will be something truly worth pursuing. This would make a great deal of sense considering that anything less would be unacceptable not only to the star of the movie but to the fans that have been following along now for so many years. The MCU has been doing a great job of bringing some of the fans’ favorite heroes to life, and now that Disney owns 21st Century Fox they’re going to have their hands full with trying to introduce new waves of heroes that people want to see represented in a big way. Plus, when you really think about it, three seems to be the magic number when it comes to individual heroes and their own stories. Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor have all had three movies so far and while not all of them have been great they’ve been good enough to push the story forward and keep the fans happy.
Nick Romano of Entertainment Weekly has made the point that Hemsworth’s contract with the MCU does expire eventually and while he’s done everything that they’ve asked of him and done it well it might take a great deal to keep him around. At this point though since the MCU is now leaning towards having a female superhero as their lead it does seem as though things might get shaken up just a bit and we could see a very big shift in the narrative of the Thor story. While we don’t know yet what’s going to happen when it comes to the end of Endgame, the idea seems to be that some heroes won’t be making it out alive, and that things are going to change in a big way. Captain Marvel’s emergence into the MCU has managed to start a shift that could be felt with the next Thor film as there’s a rumor that we could finally be seeing a female Thor wielding the sacred hammer and flying through the air. How this will affect Hemsworth’s character isn’t certain yet since many of the ideas that have been proposed are just that…ideas.
One also has to take into account the fact that Thor’s people are pretty much gone. While it seems that Valkyrie will be coming back for Endgame, possibly, maybe, the rest of his people were slaughtered and then jettisoned into space thanks to Thanos. But then again, if things turn out to be altered by the time Endgame is over, thanks to the Time Stone, there could be a lot of retconning going on in the MCU that fans aren’t fully prepared for. It does seem like an emotional backlash might come about if that were the case, but all in all it would definitely make some people happy since it means that some individuals would be brought back and some would be prevented from ever being taken in the first place.
As to a possible Thor 4 coming up it might be a while before any real details are revealed as to whether it’s going to actually happen or if the MCU is going to start pushing a dominant female cast and bring Jane Foster in as the new Thor. While it doesn’t seem as though she might come back since Natalie Portman hasn’t made an appearance in the movies it also seems pretty easy to say that they could find another woman to fit the role. Of course going to an all-female cast doesn’t seem like it would allow the MCU to keep as many fans, incorporating more female heroes and villains into the MCU would be a bonus since it would create a much more realistic look to the landscape than has happened in the last several years. Thor’s story alone has had a great many characters that could be relied upon to create another movie, but if Hemsworth isn’t there then the only logical move would be to bring in Jane Foster and have the power transfer over somehow.
How this could happen is a writer’s dream since there is so much source material to cover and so much to pull from that it should be fairly simple. Narrowing it all down into something that the fans would agree with and want to watch would be the hard part since no matter what the MCU does they need to incorporate certain elements of the stories they borrow from so that people recognize it and aren’t so insanely confused about the plot line. One thing comics fans love is being able to recognize where the movie is headed and why, the MCU mucks about with that at their own peril.
