I’ll be the first to tell you that I like Ian MacShane. He’s one of the best “gruff” actors out there. No one does “man” roles better than Ian MacShane with the exception of maybe Sam Elliott. You might remember McShane appearing on Game of Thrones last season. While he wasn’t on the show long he definitely left his mark and fans loved his appearance. McShane, who played Brother Ray in “The Broken Man,” just said something he may very well regret about GOT fans.
Here’s the full rundown from Digital Spy
Ian McShane was pretty awesome in his one-off guest turn last season — but this might not endear him to Game of Thrones fans. The actor, who played Brother Ray in the episode ‘The Broken Man’, has questioned whether hardcore viewers of the immensely popular HBO series… need to get a life. “The show is huge, but some fans seem to identify with it [too closely],” he told Empire magazine. “You want to say, ‘Have you thought about your lifestyle? Maybe you should get out a little more.’” Oof. McShane got into trouble with some fans last year after he accidentally leaked that the Hound (Rory McCann) wasn’t actually dead. “My character really is like an ex-warrior who’s become a peacenik, so I have a group of peaceful sort of cult who — I bring back a much-loved character who everybody thinks is dead,” he had said in a BBC Breakfast interview. McShane wasn’t impressed with the negative reaction he received from fans afterwards, though.
Yikes. That one kind of hurts don’t you think? Like I said. I like McShane as much as the next guy but Game of Thrones fans are about the most dedicated breed of fans on the planet. I can understand if McShane’s pointing to fans who live their ENTIRE lives in a GOT fashion. Like if your house is GOT themed and you wear GOT clothes and talk like the Lannister’s, I get that. But to generalize a whole fan base and then tell them to get a life? McShane’s going to lose a lot of fans after this.
