It’s been an absolutely bonkers season of How to Get Away with Murder this year, and tension has risen exponentially ever since the show returned from its winter hiatus. With so much going on right now, let’s dive in and unpack this week’s episode (Season 2, Episode 12), titled “It’s a Trap.”
The episode opens with Wes pouring over the documents that Annalise left at his door at the end of last week’s episode. It turns out that, ten years ago, Annalise was involved in a case that included Wes’ mother as a witness. As Wes looks through all of this information in the present, Connor freaks out over the video from Philip as Laurel reels from Frank’s revelation that he killed Lyla. Annalise calls the interns into the office to deal with the situation, but Laurel, not willing to face Frank and the others, heads to Wes’ apartment, where he lets her in on what’s going on with him. Leaving the others to handle the video, Wes and Laurel fly to Ohio to continue Wes’ investigation.
To get through the issue with Philip’s video, Annalise works to recruit one of the twins back to their side, continuing to keep this season-long storyline front-and-center even though Wes’ past is taking up such a huge amount of time since the show’s return. The twins have grown much more interesting over the season (which is good, since their debut months ago didn’t have me looking forward to seeing the story play out), and it’s a testament for How to Get Away with Murder‘s growth that it’s able to use this arc so well. With all of that said, this story felt a lot slower in “It’s a Trap” than usual, but it could be because it was overshadowed by what’s going on elsewhere.
On the other side of the coin, the exploration of Wes’ history is even better than I could have expected it to be, and it’s managed (so far) to surpass already-high expectations. I also really like that the writers are including Laurel so heavily in this investigation as it’s allowing development of a stronger friendship between two characters and actors that have always displayed a large amount of chemistry together that has never been truly tapped into. Wes and Laurel’s close proximity to each other is also opening up a new avenue of possibility, and it should be fun to see how the writers use their options.
While the story surrounding the video was a tad lackluster, the exploration of Wes’ past in “It’s a Trap” was extraordinary, and the possibilities that it’s opened up should continue to help the season to progress at a strong pace until the finale. We’re getting pretty close to that season finale, too, so I expect a lot more explosive reveals next week.
