Hawaii Five-0 Review: Adam’s Ultimate Fight

Hawaii Five-0

Hawaii Five-0 is always at its best when it’s defending and protecting its Ohana. This includes members of Five-0 and anyone else they call family. Kono’s husband Adam Noshimuri is absolutely on that list. Adam worked incredibly hard to extricate himself from all of his family’s crimes, only to be tricked into committing murder. Adam is a man of honor though, which is why he chose to turn himself in for his crimes even when it took him away from his wife. But between his enemies in organized crime, Gabriel Waincroft, and his many enemies in prison, how safe will Adam ever really be?

A chemical spill outside Halawa Prison forces an evacuation of over 1,000 inmates. The prisoners are transferred out of the prison by bus, one of which is hit with an IED. Dozens of inmates are injured and even killed, but only one dies by a very deliberate gunshot wound. This is the real reason Five-0 is called to investigate. When they arrive they learn that six inmates escaped from the bus. Duke has the unfortunate task of telling Kono that her husband Adam is one of the prison escapees. Five-0 works on the assumption that Adam went unwillingly, but thoughts do start to creep in that maybe Adam isn’t a victim.

Chin and Jerry try to piece together why their gunshot victim, Hamasaki, was targeted. He was working with the FBI to take down another criminal, but at the last minute decided not to testify. Which is why it makes even less sense that he would survive the IED blast only to be shot. That is until Jerry puts a picture of Hamasaki next to a picture of Adam, and in the chaos of the blast, they could be mistaken for each other. So it is Adam who was intended to die, and who still has a target on his back. Adam is Ohana, which means this is personal for the team. Jerry discovers that the guard who got Adam transferred to the maximum security ward was being paid from offshore accounts in the late Head of the Yakuza, Shioma. This means that whoever took Shioma’s place put a hit out on Adam. That mysterious successor is Michelle Shioma, his daughter. She assumed that Adam and Gabriel were working together, and even when Chin tells her they weren’t, it’s clear she still wants Adam dead.

Adam is doing his best to stay alive surrounded by murders, rapists, and a cannibal. He cooperates with them, but Adam is really leaving a trail for Five-0 to follow using his prayer beads as bread crumbs. The cannibal of the group begins picking off the the prisoners one by one, so Five-0 has to get to Adam before he is eaten (yes, I cannot believe I just wrote that sentence). Adam isn’t just being chased by a cannibal, he’s being chased by Michelle Shioma’s men. One of the other prisoners, a pyromaniac Five-0 put in prison, saves Adam from them. Luckily Five-0 shoots the cannibal dead so he can’t do any more harm. Adam and his only prison ally start running again together before being cornered by more of Shioma’s henchmen. Five-0 gets there just in the nick of time so that Adam and Kono can finally be reunited. It’s a bittersweet reunion since Adam must go back to serve out the rest of his sentence, but he promises his wife he’ll come back to her as soon as he can.

One of the prisoners on the bus was Nahele’s father. Nahele has been under Steve’s wing for more than a year now, especially since his own relationship with his father has not been great. Still, his father’s death hits Nahele hard. He feels as if he’s an orphan, but Steve assures him his family is still here with him. Could Steve be ready to take Nahele on full-time as his own?

Will Adam ever truly be safe?
