With the massive success Suicide Squad is currently having in theaters, it appears Gotham might be taking a page out of their book. The movie had such a strong adaptation of Harley Quinn and the Joker that Gotham’s producers are looking into adding the character to their lineup.
Lots of television news has come out of 2016’s TCA press tour, but Gotham producer John Stephens had this to say after being asked if Fox’s show would feature any characters we have seen in Suicide Squad.
“A lot of those characters, because they’re in Suicide Squad, you’re not going to be seeing them this season,” Stephens told the room of reporters. “We’ll be seeing proto-versions of some of those characters. We’ll see a proto-Killer Croc version. And we’ll be seeing a character, perhaps not this season but in times to come, who can be a forerunner of Harley Quinn which will be fun.”
Gotham currently has plans to focus largely on the origin story of the Joker and how the legend behind the character came to be. The show’s goal is to expand the mythology behind the character and give viewers a look into the growth of his cult and following.
However, should Gotham go on to get a fourth season, the producers seem to absolutely love the idea of getting to incorporate Harley Quinn and show off their take on that character’s origin and growth. It would be a ton of fun to watch the show incorporate new characters, so hopefully the show runs long enough to allow the producers to flesh out the stories they want to tell.
Gotham returns for its third season this fall with the premiere scheduled for September 19th at 8 pm on Fox. Would you like to see Harley Quinn on Gotham? What do you think about expanding the Joker’s origin?
