Before we start this review, I have to say that I have never seen The Rocky Horror Show, therefore I can’t exactly compare what the Glee kids performed in last night’s episode with the original. That said, ‘The Rocky Horror Glee Show’was pure and unadulterated entertainment.
It all starts when Emma tells Will that her boyfriend Carl aka Uncle Jesse aka John Stamos took her to see The Rocky Horror Show, which they are both major fans of. While she is telling Will all about it, he notices that she doesn’t have her weird cleaning OCD anymore. Well, that’s an overstatement. Let’s just say she’s toned it down a little. Because of that, Will realizes that Carl is actually being good for Emma and the green-eyed monster rears its ugly head. So, in order to spend some quality time with Emma and win her over, he tells her that he wants to produce The Rocky Horror Show with the Glee Club and asks her help because she is a major fan and knows all things Rocky Horror.
That is basically the entire plot. Sure, we also have Finn struggling to accept his body image and the fact that his body is not as defined as Sam’s, but whatever. I honestly didn’t really care about that. What made ‘The Rocky Horror Glee Show’so awesome were the performances.
And let’s face it, that’s what makes Glee so awesome.
First of all, John Stamos can sing! He can dance! The guy is pure awesomeness performing. I really hope we get to see more of that. Also, hello, Mr. Schuester! Why have you been hiding all that goodness under those goody-goody teacher’s clothes? I totally have a new found admiration for you. That performance with Emma was downright amazing and it got her all flustered. The fact that Santana and Brittany were spying on them just made everything even better.
Other than that, every single music number was fun and entertaining and had me fighting the urge to get up and dance myself. Quinn got a chance to shine — even though it was a small one — and even Rachel was actually somewhat likeable in this episode.
Now, there was one thing, however, that I just really need to comment about. Sue was trying to accuse the Glee Club of exposing children to inappropriate content. Even the Glee Club kids tell Mr. Schue that The Rocky Horror Show just might be a little too risqué to perform at school. I can’t help but notice the irony of that particular aspect of the episode barely a week after the whole Glee scandal. We are all well aware of the GQ photo shoot polemic and how the Parents Television Council was all over it claiming it was completely inappropriate. It’s just ironic that on the following week they are addressing that same issue — of course, in completely different circumstances — and by the end of the episode, Mr. Schue sees the error of his ways and cancels the performance, saying that they can perform if they want, but not in front of the entire school.
Polemics and scandals aside, it was a really good episode. You get an A+, ‘The Rocky Horror Glee Show’. Way to go.
