Freeform is ramping up its 2018 primetime schedule with the release of trailers for four brand new shows. With fan favorite dramas Switched at Birth and Pretty Little Liars finishing their runs, the young adult network will premiere its largest, and most varied, slate of new shows next year. The network is known for cutting edge shows with a twist which appeals to a younger demographic. From the first look at what’s to come, we’re about to see a new wave of success with the premieres of The Bold Type, Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger, Alone Together, and Siren.
Siren
Every few years there is a trend among different shows and movies. First it was witches, then it was vampires, then zombies, and finally anything and everything to do with time travel. With two new movies and Freeform’s fantasy drama Siren already in the works, the trend for 2018 will be mermaids. Eline Powell‘s character Ryn makes a mysterious entrance to the town of Bristol Cove. While most might taunt or shy away from her, marine biologist Ben (Alex Roe) is drawn to Ryn for reasons he can’t explain. That he studies the very ocean Ryn calls home might have something to do with it. Ben will have to convince Ryn he is a friend to her and the sea while coming to terms with what she is.
The Bold Type
This new series caters to the female millennials eager to see the success and struggle of their generation on screen. Aisha Dee, Katie Stevens, and Meghann Fahy are three girlfriends trying to find love and success working at a successful fashion magazine. You could call this a younger version of Sex and the City minus one extra girl, but we’re hoping that the nuances of a new generation shine through. Case in point, a storyline that involves the millennial generation using the power of social media to draw attention to unlawful detention of a Muslim woman. Carrie Bradshaw never wrote about that.
Alone Together
Freeform is also looking to add to its comedy lineup next year. Alone Together is the story of Esther and Benji, two best friends who are imperfect, blunt, and unapologetic with each other. Since they spend all their time together it’s not implausible to see why other would want to see them get together, but it’s not to be. They just understand each other the way only best friends could. These two are #FriendshipGoals.
Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger

The idea that Freeform would be the network to feature a Marvel superhero show seems odd at first, until you remember two things. The first is Freeform’s parent company ABC which is host to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The second is that this particular origin story is not about adults. Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger is the story of Tandy Bowen (Dagger) and Tyrone Johnson (Cloak), two teenagers who develop complementary powers tied to each other. If you thought the adults had trouble navigating their powers, add hormones to the mix and see what happens.
