Rachel Morrison is a cinematographer who was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on April 27, 1978. She began her career in the television and film industries in 2002 and has gradually built a reputation as one of the best female cinematographers of the current day. She is best-known for her work on films such as ‘Fruitvale Station’, ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Mudbound’. 1. She Has Won Several Awards

Rachel Morrison is certainly making her stamp as a cinematographer ash she has been nominated for many awards and some of these she has won. In 2005, she worked as the cinematographer on a television documentary called ‘Rikers High’ for which she was nominated for an Emmy Award. In 2017, she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for her work on ‘Mudbound’. She was the first woman to ever receive a nomination in that category. For the same film, she won a New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Cinematography. Again, she was the first woman to receive this accolade. Morrison won a Kodak Vision Award in 2013 for her collaborations with other female filmmakers

2. She Has Worked with Ryan Coogler Twice

During her career, Rachel Morrison has worked alongside many big names in the film industry. One of these is Ryan Coogler as she has collaborated on projects with him twice. The first occasion was in 2013 when they made ‘Fruitvale Station’. The pair then worked together again on Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ in 2018.

3. ‘Palo Alto’ was Her Film Debut as a Primary Cinematographer

After initially working in television series and telefilms, Rachel Morrison made her debut as a primary cinematographer in the independent film ‘Palo Alto’ in 2007. This film was directed and co-written by Brad Leong and was set in Palo Alto, California. The film starred Aaron Ashmore, Justin Mentell, Johnny Lewis, Ben Savage, Autumn Reese, and Tom Arnold.

4. She Attended the American Film Institute

After graduating from Concord Academy in 1996, Rachel Morrison went on to study at New York University. As she was unable to choose between film and photography, she studied for a double major in both. Her time at university helped her to decide on a career in cinematography. Therefore, after she graduated, she attended the American Film Institute Conservatory’s graduate cinematography program. In 2006, She graduated with a Master of Fine Arts.

5. She Worked on ‘The Hills’

Although she is now best-known for her work in the film industry, Rachel Morrison has also worked in television. In 2007, she took a job as the director of photography on ‘The Hills’. This is an MTV reality series. Her role included working as both a cinematographer and a camera operator. The series starred Lauren Conrad, Audrina Patridge, Whitney Port, Heidi Montag, Lo Bosworth, Stephanie Pratt, and Kristin Cavallari. It ran for six seasons from 2006 until 2010. Morrison was part of the team until 2007 and was involved in 46 episodes of the reality show.
