There’s no doubt about it, the face of Television is changing. Shows that were once popular, even those that dominated the entertainment industry, have largely fallen by the wayside in favor of a different type of entertainment. Today, people are far more interested in watching reality TV as it unfolds than they are in watching a scripted drama. That’s one reason why you find so many of these types of reality TV shows these days. However, TLC is taking things a step further with their show, entitled This Is Life. Below are five things you may not know about the show.
1. It’s not your average TV special
The show is a four-part special in its purest form. However, it’s approached much differently than most so-called reality TV shows. It follows people during some of their biggest, most important, or most emotional moments and lets you get a glimpse into their lives on a first-hand basis. The idea is to make the show more real than your typical reality TV show. For a brief time, viewers almost feel as if they are part of the family, so to speak, as they watch dramas unfold in other people’s lives.
2. It’s about capturing the human condition
Why are people interested in watching a bunch of camera crews follow people around during some of the most poignant moments of their lives? It’s all done in the hope of capturing that singular moment, the one that’s so special that it has the power to alter someone’s life from that point forward. Some of these moments are so powerful that even viewers can feel the energy as they watch what unfolds in the life of another individual.
3. The show goes deeper into the lives of others
If you think that the show only follows these individuals around during a few so-called “aha” moments, think again. The truth is, the producers are trying to document the individual’s lives, both before, during and after these events. In an attempt to Chronicle how these moments change people, they make every effort to show viewers what life is like for these individuals before the life-changing event and a catch up with them after it occurs.
4. It’s both funny and emotional
This is a show that can have you laughing so hard your sides hurt one minute and reaching for the box of tissues the next. You never know what’s going to come up next. Some of the stories are so happy that you find yourself crying tears of joy and at other times, you’re trying not to completely fall apart because of a particularly sad event that occurs.
5. Viewers can have their questions answered
There’s even an opportunity for you to get in on the action as the viewer. Thanks to social media, you can watch the show and then ask questions of the individuals that were featured on that particular special. With any luck, your question will be selected and you will get answers to whatever is bothering you. It’s a way of bringing the audience in and allowing them to become active participants in the show as opposed to merely watching it.
