Citizen Rose is a new documentary series on E!. Like its name suggests, it comes from Rose McGowan, who is one of the women who spoke out against Harvey Weinstein. As a result, it should come as no surprise to learn that Citizen Rose is focused on her personal experiences as well as how the widespread sexual misconduct has impacted other people. Here are five things that you may or may not have known about Citizen Rose:
Rose Is More Than Just the Subject
To a significant extent, Citizen Rose is focused on what happened to Rose McGowan. However, it should be noted that she is far from being just its subject, as shown by how she is the narrator of the documentary series as well. Moreover, it should be mentioned that Rose McGowan is one of the executive producers behind Citizen Rose, which makes perfect sense considering what the documentary series is setting out to do.
Citizen Rose Explores Some of Rose’s Own Background
Citizen Rose took some time to explore some of Rose’s own background. To be exact, it explored her childhood, which saw her growing up in a cult under her father’s leadership. Something that enabled her to make a number of harsh criticisms about not just the entertainment figures who were abusing people but also how the entire system has been set up in a manner that facilitates such abuses.
Rose’s Attempt to Take Control of Her Own Story
In a real sense, it can be said that Citizen Rose is an attempt by Rose McGowan to take control of the narrative about her life by telling her own story in her own words as opposed to letting it be told by the faceless companies that make up the entertainment industries. The result is a portrait of a flawed person working for a noble cause, which is rather interesting to say the least. After all, it can be argued that this is exactly what is needed because people shouldn’t have to be flawless for them to have a chance of getting justice when they are the victims of sexual misconduct.
Has a Combative Tone
Speaking of which, it is interesting to note that Citizen Rose has a rather combative tone. For example, it starts with Rose McGowan making it clear that in a real sense, she wants her viewers to be discomfited by what they see. Furthermore, Rose McGowan made a deliberate decision to avoid using Harvey Weinstein at all in the documentary series. Instead, she calls him the “Monster” for the deliberate reason of demonstrating that he is undeserving of the dignity of getting a name. Overall, the result is better than what would have been achieved through a neater and more polished product like what some people were expecting.
Features Interviews with a Number of People
With that said, Citizen Rose features interviews with a number of people involved in recent events. For example, one of the people interviewed was Ronan Farrow, who is the journalist who wrote the initial article that was published in The New Yorker. Furthermore, Rose McGowan spoke with Asia Argento, who was one of the other women who spoke out against Harvey Weinstein. Finally, it should be mentioned that Citizen Rose featured footage of other women who have spoken out against other abusers besides Harvey Weinstein.
