Five Things You Didn’t Know about “Our Cartoon President”

Our Cartoon President is a new animated show for adults that has started up on Showtime. Like the name suggests, it is centered around President Donald Trump as well as the figures who surround him in his presidential administration, promising what it calls an insider’s look at Trump’s world as well as all of the Trumpian absurdities packed therein. Here are five things that you may or may not have known about Our Cartoon President:

Started Out As a Recurring Segment

People who watch Stephen Colbert’s late night talk show should be familiar with Our Cartoon President. After all, the cartoon started out as a recurring segment on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, but has proven to be successful enough to make the transition into becoming a full-fledged show of its own. Given how it came to be, it should come as no surprise to learn that a lot of the people involved in making Our Cartoon President are involved with Colbert’s late night talk show.

Animated By Tim Luecke

For example, the lead animator for Our Cartoon President is Tim Luecke, who serves as the lead animator on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Besides the “Cartoon Trump” segments, Luecke is responsible for the “Cartoon Hilary” segments as well as a number of other recurring segments on the late night talk show that were made using animation. However, none of those have proven to be as popular as the “Cartoon Trump” segments, which is why they have received a show of their own.

Stephen Colbert Plays a Sergeant at Arms

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Stephen Colbert shows up in Our Cartoon President as a Sergeant at Arms. To be exact, he shows up as the Sergeant at Arms for the U.S. House of Representatives, which is an office chosen by the members of the House at the start of each Congress. Besides being in charge of security as well as maintaining good order, the Sergeant at Arms is also responsible for bearing the ceremonial mace, which is based on the British practice but makes much more use of Roman Republican-inspired symbols.

Features a Big Cast

Our Cartoon President has a huge cast. For example, there is President Donald Trump as well as his family members. Furthermore, there are the members of his presidential administration, who range from Sarah Huckabee Sanders to the Generals Kelly, Mattis, and McMaster. Fox News personalities make an appearance, as do both Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi.

Has Received a Mixed Response

So far, Our Cartoon President has received what can be called a mixed response. Some people have called it on-point. In contrast, other people have voiced concerns about it becoming stale. With that said, there are also people who are not fond of the premise because they think that it is satirizing the un-satirizable, meaning that they can get much the same if they were so inclined by just watching the news.
