It’s very easy to pick on the DCEU since they’ve been seen to crash and burn on a couple of different projects despite the success they’ve seen, but let’s not forget that Marvel has taken it’s fair share of hits too when it comes to casting. There are plenty of people that feel that some of the characters just weren’t presented as well as they could be given their iconic status in the comics. Of course some of these are personal opinions and others are what the crowd might think, but there are plenty of heroes in the MCU that people like and several that they don’t. It doesn’t mean that the movies and shows haven’t worked as they are, as there’s more to each production than just having the right or wrong actor. But when the fans turn on an actor and truly cite them as one of the biggest problems then it might be time to head back to the drawing board and find someone that makes more sense for the role. Now and again casting really does make a difference in the movies, though why some of those making the movies don’t take the suggestions is hard to say.
Here are some of the worst casting mistakes in the MCU.
5. Mark Ruffalo – Bruce Banner/Hulk
For one reason or another a lot of people love Ruffalo as Bruce Banner and can’t stand the somber tone that Edward Norton delivered. Does anyone read the comics? Bruce Banner is the kind of guy that isn’t exactly soft around the edges and does have a little bit of controversy to his character. Norton’s Hulk was a true savage, whereas Ruffalo’s was allowed to gain a softer edge that might have made him appeal to the younger fans more, meaning that people have fallen in love with the Disneyfied Hulk in a way that they didn’t with the more raw and unfettered green goliath. At least Norton’s acted on instinct and might have still been part savage when Banner and the Hulk finally came together to form one being.
4. Jeremy Renner – Hawkeye
Personally I like Hawkeye as a character and I don’t think that Renner did a horrible job, but a lot of people for one reason or another don’t think that he did that great of a job. But seriously, looking at the comics and the live action version there is a lack of a cocky attitude that Clint always had, and the idea that he’s just that good. Plus, he didn’t always get along with Captain America, and he’s even gone as far as throwing down with Wolverine at one point knowing full well that he couldn’t win at the moment. Also, Hawkeye’s been known to use firearms on occasion as well, so that might have helped just a bit.
3. Lee Pace-Ronan the Accuser
This character has just been misused over and over in the movies as in the comics he’s actually a terror to behold and an insanely powerful enemy depending on who he’s facing. It could be due to the MCU making Captain Marvel so insanely powerful, but the fact that Ronan ran like a whipped dog near the end of the movie was a big sticking point for a lot of fans since he didn’t put up much of a fight and looked ready to soil himself when Carol really got going. On top of that he’s been a non-entity throughout all but a couple of movies in the MCU, and to be fair he didn’t even show up to do much at that point.
2. Mickey Rourke – Ivan Vanko
Putting Mickey Rourke in the MCU at all feels like a giant mistake since his acting isn’t that great and apart from Sin City his time in the comic book movies should have been short and over with. In a big way it feels as though he was phoning this role in and didn’t give it a lot of thought. Add onto that the fact that his character was kind of a nobody with a great deal of intellect and it feels as though if they were going to put him in that he should have been a much deadlier opponent and been allowed to rough Iron Man and War Machine up quite a bit more than he did before they finally defeated him.
1. Natalie Portman – Jane Foster
Apart from the comedic moments in the movie and the supposed chemistry with Chris Hemsworth it doesn’t feel like she had much of a place in this movie, apart from being a very attractive and smart individual. The idea of bringing her back as the female Thor is enough to make a person wince at the thought of what she’s going to do on the big screen and how her character will come off to fans.
Some people just can’t be wedged into a franchise that easily.
