Five Movie Stunts Nearly as Deadly as They Looked

Five Movie Stunts Nearly as Deadly as They Looked

Given the spectacular scenes shown in movies, it should come as no surprise to learn that movie stunts can be rather dangerous to the people performing them. Some examples are rather obvious when it comes to their risk. In contrast, others are less obvious but no less risky because of it for the simple reason that events can be unpredictable.

Here are five movie stunts that proved to be almost as dangerous as they looked on the movie screen:

Back to the Future Part III

In Back to the Future Part III, there is a scene in which Marty McFly is being hung by the neck before been rescued. When Michael J. Fox shot the scene, there was a take in which he wasn’t standing on a box to ensure his safety, with the result that he was actually hanging by his neck. Fortunately, he survived the incident in spite of the fact that he was unconscious for 30 seconds before the crew realized that he was being hung for real and removed him from the setup.

Now You See Me

The most spectacular illusions can be rather dangerous when something goes wrong. In brief,Now You See Me has a scene in which a character played by Isla Fisher had to escape from a water tank while facing the simultaneous threat of both piranhas and not being able to breath underwater. She got stuck, which caused her to start banging on the sides of the water tank for help but failed to receive it because that was what her character was supposed to do in the scene. As a result, Isla Fisher had to save herself through the water tank’s safety switch, which might explain why she didn’t make a return to Now You See Me 2.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1

For a flying scene on a broom in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, Daniel Radcliffe’s stunt double David Holmes had to be suspended from wires in front of a green screen. When one of the wires snapped, that caused him to smash into a wall before falling upon the crash mat. David Holmes remained conscious but lost feelings in his legs, which turned out to be because of his spine.

Rocky IV

Sylvester Stallone has been hurt a number of times over the course of his career. For example, when he was filming Rocky IV, he asked Dolph Lundgren to punch him for real, which turned out to be a serious mistake. In brief, Dolph Lundgren managed to hit him so hard that his heart smashed into his rib cage and started to swell, meaning that Sylvester Stallone had to be hospitalized for a short period of time. In fact, it was so unbelievable that the insurance company refused to believe the incident until the footage of the incident was sent to them.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Viggo Mortensen had a number of incidents when filming The Lord of the Rings franchise. For example, there was the time when the man playing Lurtz was supposed to pretend to hurl a dagger but actually hurled it at Mortensen because his prosthesis made it difficult for him to see what was happening, though Mortensen was able to avoid being harmed by deflecting it with his sword. However, he is known to have chipped a tooth as well as broken a couple of toes in other scenes. Finally, when Mortensen was filming a scene from The Two Towers in which Aragorn was floating face-down in a river, he was actually dragged off by the river, slammed into a wall, and then trapped beneath the surface for a short period of time until he could escape the unexpected current.
