The Exorcist Review: “Through My Most Grievous Fault”

Geena Davis in 'The Exorcist'

The Exorcist on Fox has been building and building all season, and it seems like things have been getting ready to absolutely explode. We were promised that this week’s episode would lead to huge things for the show, so let’s take a look at Chapter Five, “Through My Most Grievous Fault.”

The episode opens with Fathers Tomas and Marcus discussing what they’re trying to do with the Rance family in order to get the demon out of Casey. The exorcism is taking much longer than anyone involved would hope, and it’s taking an immense toll on the entire family (quickly, shoutout to the makeup work on this series — good Lord Almighty, this is so good). Even Henry, already incredibly bad off because of what he’s gone through, is beginning to get affected in terrible ways, and it’s difficult to see how this group of people could possibly recover from this experience.

The big development in the episode, of course, is the revelation that Davis’ Angela Rance is in fact Regan MacNeill, the possessed girl from the original The Exorcist film. We had gotten brief hints that this series was serving as a continuation of that film throughout the season, but this reveal is direct confirmation that this is a sequel to the film. Regan being a character on this show and her daughter being the most recently possessed absolutely turns this show on its head, and I abslutely cannot wait to see how this story continues to progress.

The acting in this episode? Superb. Hannah Kasulka is delivering the performance of a lifetime as the possessed Casey, and it’s going to be a real shame if she doesn’t get the credit she really deserves for this one. The rest of the cast, though, is just as strong. I’ve talked at length about what Geena Davis brings to this series (which means so much more now that we know Angela’s secret), but Ben Daniels, Alfonso Herrera, and Alan Ruck are also bringing their entire skillset with every single episode (Brianne Howey is also great at Kat, but her story is understandably taking a backseat for the moment).

The effects on The Exorcist have been spectacular since the beginning, but the exorcism aspect has really delivered on all fronts. Aside from the story itself, you can just tell how much fun the entire production team is having with this show. Where else do they get the chance to have a possessed girl fly around a room while priests pray for her on network television? Kudos to Fox for having the cajones to give this series a chance.

“Through My Most Grievous Fault” may easily be the best episode of this series so far, and it opens up so much room for exploration that I’m left in absolute shock. The Exorcist is turning out to be one of the best horror series on television of the decade, and you’re missing out if you haven’t jumped onboard.
