The Conjuring Universe is a horror film franchise that includes the Conjuring series of films. The first ‘The Conjuring’ was released in 2013. Initially, the intention was to call this film ‘The Warren Files’ as it was based on the real-life stories of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The second film, ‘The Conjuring 2′, was released three years later, and this focused on the Enfield Poltergeist case. Both these films were directed by James Wan, who also co-wrote the second installment in the series. In 2016, Wan announced that there would be a third film in the series, but that he would not direct the film because of scheduling conflicts. He also suggested that there are potentially many more films in the pipeline as the Warrens had so many stories and that The Conjuring 3 had been in development for some time. Now, there is more news about the release of the third installment in the series, and here is what we know so far about The Conjuring 3.
Replacing Wan as the director is Michael Chaves, and this is only the second feature film he has directed. His first directorial role was for the 2009 short film ‘Worst Date Ever’. He went on to direct several more short films, including ‘Regen’, ‘Make Note of Every Sound’, ‘The Maiden’, and ‘Billie Eilish: Bury a Friend’. He has also directed the 2015 television mini-series ‘Chase Champion’, which consisted of 11 episodes. Chaves feature film directorial debut was the 2019 horror movie ‘The Curse of the La Llorona.
In April 2019, Wan used his own website to reveal the new logo for ‘The Conjuring 3.’ Although it has not been confirmed by either New Line Cinema or Warner Bros. that this is the logo that is being used, it appears that this is the case. The film’s logo features the same font as the previous film, and this is prominent against a backdrop of a creepy town.
Returning as the writer of the film is David Leslie Johnson, who also co-wrote the screenplay for The Conjuring 2 with James Wan, Chad Hayes, and Carey W. Hayes. With a career that spans three decades, Daniel Leslie Johnson is a hugely experienced writer and has also worked in many other aspects of filmmaking. Some of his best-known films include ‘Orphan’, ‘Aquaman’, and ‘Red Riding Hood’. The fact that he wrote the screenplay for The Conjuring 2 adds an element of continuity to the style of the series.
More information about the release of The Conjuring 3 has been revealed by producer Peter Safran, says Digital Spy. According to Safran, the production team is confident that filming will begin in 2019, meaning that the film will be ready for release in 2020. Warner Bros. confirmed this news, saying that the release date for The Conjuring 3′ is now set for September 11, 2020. It has also been confirmed that both Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will be reprising their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren. The two actors have played these roles in both the firsts and the second installment of the film series, so it wouldn’t be the same without them. It is rumored that Sterling Jerins is also returning to play the Warrens daughter, Judy.
Another possible returning cast member is Bonnie Adams who plays Valak. This is a demon that appeared in the first two movies that was banished to hell by Lorraine in The Conjuring 2. However, this is unlikely and has not been mentioned by anyone who is involved in the film. Other than that, it is likely that that the rest of the cast will be completely new as each of the films is based on a different story involving different families. So, what about the storyline of the new movie? At the moment, the exact nature of the storyline is a closely guarded secret. However, it has been confirmed that just like the previous films, the storyline is based on the real-life investigations of the Warrens.
One rumor regarding the storyline is that it is based on the 1981 ‘devil made me do it’ trial. In real life, a man stood trial for murder and his defense was that he did it because he was possessed by a demon. It is possible that there is truth in this rumor as Wan, the director of the first two movies, has allegedly let slip that it is about a man on trial. Wan also commented that he believed it was the first time someone had used possession as a defense in American history.
This is not the only potential storyline that has been talked about. Farmiga revealed that there was a werewolf involved in the storyline. However, it has not been confirmed if this is true. There has also been some talk about what the storyline will not involve. Safran suggested that the storyline of the movie would not focus on a haunted house and a family in peril like the first two films. He hinted that the storyline involved something completely different. The trailer for the film is not being released until 2020, but this should give everyone some more clues about what to expect.
For now, this is all the information available about The Conjuring 3. Fans of The Conjuring Universe will have to wait until closer to its release to learn more about the upcoming horror movie. At the same time, they can also find out more about the other upcoming The Conjuring Universe films, ‘The Crooked Man’ and an untitled The Nun film. In the meantime, they can join the most recent addition to the franchise’s repertoire, ‘The Curse of La Llorona’. This film was released on April 19, 2019. Therefore, there is plenty to look forward to for those who have enjoyed the previous The Conjuring Universe films.
