Five Things You Didn’t Know about J.A. Bayona

J.A. Bayona is a Spanish director that has come onto the scene in recent years in a big way by way of creating a few films that have been deemed as visual masterpieces and a credit to what he can do. So far he hasn’t done a whole lot in the US, but he’s bound to become either a big star and be firmly in demand after his next few projects or will need to rework a few things and keep moving forward. Chances are that he’ll find a good deal of success with what he has on his plate at the moment even if one project in particular seems to be wearing its franchise a little thin. There is hope there but if it succeeds it will be because Bayona found a new way to bring forth an idea that might have seen better days in its earliest form.

Here’s to hoping he succeeds.

5. He was brought on to direct Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

The next movie to come in this ongoing saga feels a little unnecessary but is being pushed forward anyway along with a whole new slew of effects that  are bound to be something incredibly eye-catching. Bayona has a lot of pressure on him at this point to make certain that Jurassic World’s reputation doesn’t go the way of the dinosaurs. If he succeeds it’ll mean he’s something of a genius.

4. He has a twin brother.

His twin brother Carlos has stood in for him a time or two during award ceremonies without anyone being the wiser. So long as Carlos knew what to say and how to act everything should have been fine. It seems a little unfair to ask his brother to do such a thing but somehow I get the feeling that Carlos didn’t see it as an imposition really. After all he got to get out and rub shoulders with the stars.

3. He’s on very good terms with Guillermo Del Toro.

Bayona is good friends with Del Toro and considers him a mentor. The two met at the Sitges Film Festival in 1993 and got to know each other a bit. Del Toro told Bayona that he would help him out whenever possible after that which is pretty cool to think about. If there was ever anyone you’d want in your corner when it came to film advice and help it would be Guillermo Del Toro.

2. He started out directing commercials and music videos.

Everyone’s got to start somewhere and it could have been worse. Music videos and commercials seem like they can get rather tedious after a while but it’s work. It’s also a good way to make the case for having put in your time and been through enough stuff to prove that you’re worth the effort.

1. He’s done a few films about child-mother relationships.

Every director has their favorite subject to work with and for Bayona it seems to be the troubles and issues that can go with child-mother relationships. He’s only done a few films on the subject but it seems to be his favorite.

Let’s hope he can help life find a way in Jurassic World.
