Now that a majority of our favorite TV shows have signed off until September, we now have a few extra hours in our schedule. Instead of enjoying the beautiful Summer weather, we here at TV Overmind are already thinking about the Emmy Awards which will air in September. The nominations won’t be announced until mid-July, but we thought we would put our recommendations in to the nomination committee for our favorites. Over the next several weeks, you will see TV Overmind’s dream picks. This week we will take a look at the our favorite Emmy contenders in the area of Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Did your favorite make the cut?
Julianna Margulies – The Good Wife
Julianna Margulies is no stranger to the Emmys. She was nominated six times for her work on ER (she won in 1995) and has received two wins for portraying Alicia Florrick on The Good Wife. The seventh and final season of The Good Wife was by far the best for the drama and that is largely in part to Margulies’ superb performance. She should be awarded for her hard work!
Ellen Pompeo – Grey’s Anatomy
Season 12 could be a lucky one for Ellen Pompeo. The Grey’s Anatomy actress has yet to receive a nomination for her work, but her stellar performance this season deserves some recognition. One of Pompeo’s greatest moments came half-way through the season when her character Meredith Grey was attacked by a patient and had to deal with a painful recovery.
Connie Britton – Nashville
Who doesn’t love Connie Britton? The talented actress has received four nominations at the Emmys, but still has yet to garner a win. This could be Britton’s year as she delivered a strong performance as country music sensation Rayna James on the fourth season of Nashville. Not only did she marry her true love and balance running a music label, but Rayna also dealt with her daughter emancipating herself.
Viola Davis – How to Get Away with Murder
Viola Davis was a winner at the Emmys last year for her performance as top-notch and no-nonsense lawyer Annalise Keating on How to Get Away with Murder. Who knew that the talented actress could top her already amazing performance from last year during the mediocre second season of the ABC series? Some of Davis’ finest moments are when she is sans make-up contemplating the mistakes she has made in her life.
Lady Gaga – American Horror Story
We knew Lady Gaga had talent as she is one of the hottest performers in pop music. If you have watched any of her music videos, you would know that Gaga has some pretty big acting chops. Ryan Murphy took notice and gave her a leading role in the fifth installment of his American Horror Story franchise. She already received a Golden Globe win for her portrayal of The Countess. However, AHS may be considered a mini-series and not a drama… We will have to wait until July to find out.
