Thank God it’s over. That’s all I can say. You might remember about a month ago I wrote how absolutely wrong it was that Dirty Dancing would be remade into an awful TV movie starring Abigail Breslin. I said it back then and I’m happy to say it now, it’s horrible. I stuck to my guns and didn’t watch one second of this flop. All I did was smile and read all the horrible reviews. I mean seriously. Did anyone even remotely think this would be pulled off? No offense to Abigail Breslin here but she hasn’t been good in pretty much anything since Little Miss Sunshine. Let’s face it, she’s no star and she’s certainly no Frances Houseman either. Jennifer Gray should have been stewing.
Given I didn’t even see this movie I still have a right to talk about it because of one man, Patrick Swayze. In the era of reboots I’ve accepted that these are inevitable but with a remake or reboot comes great responsibility. One of those responsibilities is to do the original films justice. This just happens to be my opinion but you cannot, absolutely cannot do ANY Patrick Swayze movie justice by remaking it. Cases in point? Point Break, Red Dawn, now Dirty Dancing, and good God I hope this never works, the Road House remake.
Like I said, I’ve grown to accept the reboot but I think at this point we need a hard rule in effect in Hollywood: no remakes of anything Patrick Swayze, ever. Also, let’s add another name to the list: Gene Wilder.
I hope we never hear of Dirty Dancing again unless it’s the 1987 film. I’m terribly sorry about this Mr. Swayze. What a sick world we live in.
