In October 2005, “Run’s House” premiered to detail to us the life of Reverend Run and his family. With time, we came to know about Diggy Simmons, who has forever asked people to treat him as an independent talent and not base his family’s success to judge him. Luckily, fans have listened, and Diggy has continued to make his impact in both the music and film industries, just like his father. Since there is yet to be a reality show based on Diggy, you still can learn about him from these facts.
1. He preferred to stay away from music
We have come to appreciate families that have all ventured in a particular field and prospered with the Kardashian family being the ideal example. The Simmons also have made a name for themselves in the music industry, and Diggy felt he should set himself apart by going down a different path. However, you can never turn away from what you are destined to be, and Diggy Simmons found himself rapping and liking it enough to rap for his friends. They encouraged him to take it seriously, and the rest is history.
2. Why he took a break from music
Diggy confessed that at the time he made his album, he was so much in his head and needed some time off the music scene to figure out his life. Coming of age has almost always been a tumultuous time for anyone wondering how to enter the new adulthood phase and leave their childhood behind. Therefore Diggy took two years for some self-discovery and to be at a better place mentally as he told Hip Hop DX. The couple of years was enough, and he learned to let everything fall in place hence the second album has a single titled “It Is What It Is.”
3. He lives a healthy lifestyle
Among the people that Diggy looks up to, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels sits at the top. According to Diggy, DMC is addicted to fitness. Since the older rapper has been a significant influence on Diggy’s life, then it is not a surprise that Diggy was impacted also to lead a healthy lifestyle and appreciate fitness. Diggy, however, does not consider himself “special” because he prefers doing something constructive in his free time, unlike his peers who would rather party. To him, drinking and having wild nights is all part of growing up; hence, he cannot judge how people choose to spend their time.
4. What inspired him to release the single “It Is What It Is.”
Just like “Que Sera Sera” means “whatever will be, will be,” Diggy Simmons had undergone life’s ups and downs to know that sometimes, things are out of our hands. It is this realization that we cannot control everything that led him through an acceptance phase; hence, the title of the song. He says that you cannot foresee the cards you are dealt with; thus, you will have to know how to play the hand.
5. His favorites
In sports, Diggy’s greatest athlete of all time is Michael Jordan, but currently, his favourite is LeBron James, whose playing style, aggression and community welfare sense attracts Diggy. As for superheroes, Diggy thinks T’Challa from Black Panther is the best. For his food, the rapper’s go-to courier is Postmates, but when he is in New Jersey then whichever diner is open at the moment he needs his craving satisfied will do.
6. How his interest in acting began
If you have ever watched “The Start Up”, then you must have caught Diggy making his film debut in the BET movie. Diggy was approached by Kenya Barris, the film’s writer, and immediately Diggy was captivated because it was a story based on his life. Matter of fact is the title of the movie was initially”Diggy Simmons MOW.” The 2013 film is about how young hipsters attempt to become famous through blogging, but the primary writer is threatened when he uncovers too much about the world of stripping and other hustles. Diggy acknowledges that the movie made people to start appreciating him beyond his music.
7. He was once rumored to be engaged to Jessica Jarrell
In 2012, rumors had it that the musician was secretly engaged to a 17- year- old model and singer, Jessica Jarell. According to IBT, it is his friends who were spreading the gossip saying that the two had been engaged around Christmas 2011 and were planning to get married when Diggy turned 18. However, Diggy shut down the rumors saying that he heard about his own engagement from the media but was single.
8. The inspiration behind “Lighten Up.”
Diggy disclosed in one interview that after taking a break from music, fear withheld him from making it back to the industry. Maybe he felt he would not be a success, but with time, Diggy decided not to take himself too seriously, which inspired the title “Lighten Up.” The two words act as a positive affirmation to the 23-year-old that focusing on the result will prevent one from enjoying the entire journey. He, therefore, advises others to let things flow and avoid the pressure of wanting something to turn out in a specific way; once you have done all you can, trust the process to give you a great outcome.
9. He would love to collaborate with Harry Styles
Diggy cannot say that his music has not enabled him to brush shoulders with some of the legendary musicians. He boasts of collaborations with Pharrell and Bruno Mars among many more artists. However, although he considers Kanye West and Jay Z as some of his favorite musicians, he hopes to one day do a song with Harry Styles. Diggy thinks it would be an excellent chance for both of them since neither have done a song in the other’s genre. He shares a lot with Styles since both are not only musicians but actors as well.
10. He took four months to compile his second album
When Diggy was ready to get back in the studio, he did not hope to complete any project, yet when he started making music, nothing held him back. Tapping from the experiences of six years he had been away from the industry, Diggy focused on the life lessons and mental growth he had gone through to come up with an album.
