When you think of all the zombie flick that have come and gone throughout the years and the different reactions that the people in each movie and show have to the sudden emergence of the dead when they get up and either walk, or run, towards the nearest warm body they can find, it’s not hard to think that people have been getting burned out. The Dead Don’t Die seems a lot different just from the trailer alone since it creates a deadpan sort of humor that’s been noticed by the likes of Meagan Navarro from Bloody Disgusting. While her initial thought about the town being the main character is actually kind of interesting and could be spot on, the actors in the film are already showing that it’s not a straight up comedy that’s been created, but more of an introspective and even darkly humorous horror film that creates yet another take on the zombies that we haven’t really seen yet.
Robert Saucedo from Birth.Movies.Death seems to think that a lot of people are going to be walking out of the theater frustrated and possibly a little disappointed with the film since it’s already apparent that it’s not The Walking Dead or even Shaun of the Dead in that it’s going to be completely serious or even darkly humorous. Honestly that’s a good thing though since in the realm of the zombie films there are simply too many that are almost exactly alike and, since the advent of zombies that can get up and run, there are dozens of ways to go about a zombie movie that doesn’t include doing something that’s exactly the same. There have been so many zombie movies in the past that a lot of them have become increasingly predictable and while this one might prove to be the same way in some regards it’s also likely that it’s going to be just different enough that it will become a cult classic in time since the cast, the story, and the overall feel of it thus far seem to indicate that it’s going to be worth a look.
The zombies are already a little more interesting since they do tend to take a little something from Shaun of the Dead in that they seem to gravitate towards various things that they enjoyed when they were alive, almost like a habit. In Shaun of the Dead however these habits were more work or hobby related and didn’t guide the zombies toward a specific thing. But that’s another part of the movie that, yes, might be a bit quirky and possibly corny, but is also great enough that it’s bound to be something that people pick up on and think is at least unique and innovative. Plus, there’s the fact that the cast is already turning out to be too great to miss.
Think about it, in a lot of zombie movies we’ve seen a small number of great actors mixed in with a few that we didn’t really know and had probably been famous years ago for one or two roles. In this movie we’re getting Bill Murray, I mean you could just stop right there since he’s so great. But on top of that we get Adam Driver, Chloe Sevigny, Selena Gomez, Danny Glover, Steve Buscemi, Tilda Swinton, and Iggy Pop just to mention a few. That’s almost like the Endgame version of a zombie movie when it comes to the level of talent being presented, though of course a few influential names could be added, but then it might alter the whole movie.
On the topic of being deadpan though in terms of humor it seems that this is going to work since so far it would seem perfect considering that the characters either know about zombies from folklore and legends and have yet to believe, or are at least a little wiser and quicker on the draw than many people in the movies and TV shows. Ever notice that? A lot of shows and movies don’t seem to give their characters much prior knowledge about zombies even if it comes in the form of comic books and legends that no one believes. In this movie it’s just as implausible to believe in such things, but Driver’s character belts out the belief that the zombies have attacked pretty quickly it would seem, and that would at least seem to indicate that someone in the story has a working knowledge of zombies and the kind of things they do. That alone would be a great development in the movie since it does seem as though the townsfolk do react in a much manner that many of us would like to believe we’d emulate should a zombie attack ever occur in real life. In short, this movie will be awesome since it doesn’t make the characters act as though the apocalypse is raining down on them. It’s a zombie attack, time to lock and load and get down to business.
