Check Out “Nutty Christmas:” A Cracking Good Animated Holiday Short

A Nutty Christmas is just the cracking good time you need to watch for the holidays. Have you ever wondered what a holiday nutcracker might look like to a walnut? This fun little production shows the dark side of the holidays in a fun and amusing way when it begins with a walnut party that’s going just fine until the protagonist nut decides to switch up the music. The others soon enough realize that the tune has changed and start walking away, obviously displeased. The party guy can’t really figure out why they don’t approve, but that seems a secondary worry when a nearby present begins to topple, it’s shadow looming large over several of the nuts before dropping upon the hapless victims.

The protagonist wakes up only moments later to a nightmare as he sees walnuts missing parts of their shells, their inner nut meat exposed or broken off. He sees another nut walking around in a daze, until its face, which is the top half of its shell, falls away, which is followed by the rest of it as he looks elsewhere. A dark shadow falls over one of the other damaged walnuts, who’s missing half an eye and has exposed nut meat glaring out from behind its shell. The nut tries to run but is unable as a large, wooden hand reaches down and snatches it up, out of sight. The next thing that’s heard is a brittle CRUNCH, as the separate halves of the unfortunate nut’s shell fall to the floor. The lead character watches in horror, his gaze moving up, up, and finally up until it rests upon the grinning monstrosity that is the nutcracker.

This thing looks like a demonic cross between Snidely Whiplash and Pinocchio, and is every bit as mean as it looks. The lumbering wooden soldier comes marching after the lead nut as it runs away, losing it amidst the packages that make up the landscape. The nut has to duck and cover as several pointed ornaments suddenly fall from the tree, giving him an idea as the nutcracker appears again, threatening and terrible all at once. The nut tosses one of the ornaments, which is pulverized as the nutcracker flexes his jaw. But as he looks down he finds that the nut has disappeared.

The nutcracker seemingly corners the nut atop a present, but the walnut escapes by diving off the box onto a strand of Christmas lights, evading the nutcracker, who then topples heavily to the ground. Running for his shelled life the nut bumps into the toy Santa he was playing with before this escapade occurred. Getting an idea he goes as fast as he can, putting his plan into motion as the nutcracker slowly awakes.

With the plastic Santa secured and the nutcracker on the rampage again the nut swings into action, lodging the Santa in the nutcracker’s wide open maw, where it’s immediately jammed as the nutcracker tries in vain to clamp down. But before it can dislodge the Santa the nut loops another strand of lights around the handle jutting from the nutcracker’s back and pulls down as hard as he can. The strain is simply too much, and the top of the nutcracker’s head pops off as the fiend lands on his back, the top half of his head landing in front of it while the Santa lands on top of that.

Merry Christmas indeed.
