Bruce Willis Starring in “Death Wish” Reboot: Yes, Really

This is something we certainly didn’t see coming. Of all the people that could have starred in a new version of Death Wish it wasn’t Bruce Willis that a lot of people were thinking of. Still the trailer looks sound and the premise seems to be about the same. There are a few notable differences obviously but for the most part it looks like the same movie just updated. With Bruce Willis in the cast though, you can bet that those differences are going to seem to a lot of people like a straight up deviation from the original film.

So let’s see what’s different and what’s going to stay the same.

The main character is going to be a doctor.

In the original film Charles Bronson was an architect. This film seems to lean more heavily on the fact that Bruce Willis’ character is a man that helps people and the simple truth is that he couldn’t help his wife and daughter. Aside from their professions both men feel as though they failed their families when they needed them the most. Their feelings both turn inward though as they eventually find that confronting dangerous men and killing them has become a rush that they can’t deny has merit. Another big difference though is that Willis’ character goes after the men that assaulted his daughter and killed his wife. Bronson’s character is turned on to the life of a vigilante after his own brush with a mugger. The vendetta that carries on into the rest of the movie though is about the same.

The new movie is based in Chicago, whereas the original was in New York.

Both are mean cities where the worst criminal elements are capable of some of the most horrible atrocities. But in both cities the tolerance for vigilante justice is extremely low. The difference is that in New York it seems to be much harder to find anyone even when going by similarities. The main gist of it is though that each city starts to embrace the idea of a lone gunman going out and handling the city’s crime problem in as efficient a manner as possible. Where law enforcement can’t or won’t touch certain criminals, this lone avenger will without hesitation.

The ending scene seems to be about the same.

The iconic scene in which Bronson is escorted out of New York and told never to return is no doubt going to come into effect since in the trailer we can already see Bruce Willis pointing his finger in the form of a gun at someone off screen. He almost looks excited to get started up once again upon reaching his next destination.

The new adaptation of Death Wish seems like it’s going to be very similar to the original save for the obvious updates and increase in the level of action. You’ve almost got to expect anything with Bruce Willis in it to have a massive amount of violence and bodies as the movie draws to a close.
