While it would be impossible to silence someone like Bill Maher I think we can safely say he’s regretting ever having Milo Yiannapoulos on Real-Time. While he may not publicly state that, Milo brought a ton of attention to his show. Then when Yiannopoulos’s pedophilia comments came out and he resigned from Breitbart, people began to focus on Bill Maher. The problem with drawing that much attention to yourself is that now people are going to be looking for anything and everything to nail you. Maher may have been nailed today. According to Deadline
“Sunlight is the best disinfectant,” Bill Maher smugly told the New York Times this week, taking credit for bringing down infamous alt-right troll Milo Yiannopoulos. According to Maher, Yiannopoulos became a persona non grata because of his controversial Real Time appearance, not the unearthed footage of Yiannopoulos’s comments in which he appears to condone pedophilia. Now, Maher’s own comments on illicit relationships are getting attention: Recently unearthed footage from Maher’s old ABC show Politically Incorrect features the host defending Mary Kay Letourneau, the teacher convicted of having sex with a then-12-year-old student. “I admit it’s unorthodox. She’s 35, the boy is 14,” Maher says in the clip. “He was younger when they started. But she is pregnant again … They are keeping the mother in jail because she won’t conform to what society feels should be the perfect American family.” Not quite, but lucky for Maher, this video is getting its time in the sunlight.
Clearly Maher will come out and say he was joking or something to that effect but you can’t change what he said. These are real words. I happen to be a fan of Maher and agree with a decent amount of what he says but even I think the guy steps over the line too much. He’s in some serious hot water right now and might not be able to recover.
