Cars can play an extremely important role in a film. In some movies cars are in effect characters themselves. When the Fast and the Furious franchise started, the entire movie was based around fast cars. Without the cars you’d have no movie. In other films cars serve an extremely important purpose. They provide an aesthetic as well as important identity to the characters involved. While the Ghostbusters would have been cool in their own right, Ecto-1 put a stamp on exactly who these guys were. Batman could do plenty of damage all by himself, but he’s 100 times cooler with a Batmobile. It would be nice to time travel in a Pinto but isn’t it way flashier in a Delorean? I think you get my point.
