Andy Serkis to Receive Motion Picture Showman of the Year Award From Publicists

It’s nice to see Andy Serkis is being awarded the Motion Picture Showman of the Year from publicists but really the guy needs to start getting more nods from other folks since honestly he’s done so much in his career that it seems kind of insulting that he’s being left out. He’s one of the best actors to come on the scene in a long time and just because he’s been seen more in motion capture roles than anything lately shouldn’t be a factor. I’d love to see any other actor do half the stuff he has and make it work. The guy is seriously talented and doesn’t seem to ever get that much recognition except when people say “that was him??”.

Yeah, that needs to be remedied. He doesn’t seem to mind it at least since in most of his interviews he talks amicably about his performances and what it takes to mimic the walk of the animals and other characters he plays. But the acting behind the motion capture technology is still him, and it’s still so on point that one can’t help but marvel at the kind of job he does. Look at his work with Gollum, that was a creepy aspect of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and the Hobbit and people just kind of looked past him. To hear that he’s getting awarded for this now is nice to hear since he more than deserves it. Even when he’s not wearing the motion capture suits and is playing a live action role he’s interesting to watch since he’s got the kind of personality that makes him seem like the kind of guy you’d want to hang around.

In the role of a bad guy he’s even personable, which is and isn’t odd since plenty of bad guys seem charming and witty until you get to the real danger behind all that. But Serkis is such a talented actor that watching him is a pleasure because he helps make movies better with his mere presence. The fact that he’s done so much without being able to show his true face is awesome since when you go back and watch you realize the movements were all him. Obviously the computer made up the exterior of his character but the movements, the gestures, the facial expressions, all of that is based off of what he’s doing. This guy knows how to move his body and create facial expressions that so perfectly mimic the characters he’s playing that they come off as flawless.

It really feels like he should be nominated for more than this one award but at this point when it comes to any award an actor takes what they can get it seems. At times the awards that exist now seem to be based more on who’s popular rather than who’s done the best job. Because if the latter were true then Serkis would on an absolute roll and in no way slowing down as of now.
