I had mixed feelings about this episode. I know it was holiday themed and it is a musical show, so it had to be filled with Christmas songs, but some of the songs were just plain cheesy. When the Glee club was singing and decorating a Christmas tree together in the beginning I was really afraid the whole show would be like that and I started to cringe. Also, the whole Finn and Rachel breakup drama set to holiday songs was annoying to me.
Thankfully three things saved the show from being too overly sweet. The first moment I actually enjoyed was Kurt and Blaine’s “Baby It’s Cold Outside” duet. I am not one to jump on bandwagons, but that Darren Criss is kind of awesome. He is a much better addition to the show than Chord Overstreet who plays Sam in my opinion. I am really enjoying the way the show is slowly building to Kurts first relationship. But I digress…back to Christmas talk we must go.
The second saving grace of the show was Beast and her crusade to help Artie keep Brittany’s belief in Santa alive. At first I thought the whole story line was ridiculous, but Dot-Marie Jones was amazing in the scene where Beast talks to Brittany dressed as Santa. Also, the fact she does help Artie pull of a sort of Christmas miracle with braces that help him temporarily walk in the end was kind of cool.
The third great part of the show was of course Jane Lynch as Sue the Grinch. The scene where she destroyed the glee club choir room set to the Grinch song with Becky as her minion was priceless. She managed to steal Christmas away from the Glee club in true Sue style, but yet give it back to them again in the last scene. In the spirit of the holidays I will say that despite my fear in the beginning of the episode that the show was going to be beat me on the head with cheer and good will, it did succeed in giving me a little hope for the holidays.
