The Five Best Female Movie Villains of the 2000s

Don’t ever count the female villains out, especially in the 2000s and especially since they’ve gotten particularly vicious, enough so that the male villains have had to up their game in order to not be outdone. With women however the propensity for violence might not be quite as high at all times, but the possibility of them going crazy and getting out of control is almost always a possibility. But as in real life women tend to be more subtle, preferring to not waste their energy and maximize their efficiency through other means. Ever see a female villain just go berserk as a male would? It happens, not nearly as often since women do in fact think differently than men and have a much different approach to violence and will find ways to break an opponent down aside from just delivering a beatdown.

Here are some of the most terrifying female villains of the 2000s. Feel free to add a few into the mix if you feel the need, as there are a lot of them.

5. Edith Brennan – Mama-Mama

The twisted, tortured spirit of a mother that died long ago, Mama is what happens when a person dies in the midst of a horrendous rage that was never allowed to reach its proper resolution. When a man brings his daughters to a cabin in the wilderness intending on putting them to rest, Mama attacks and takes the two young girls as her own, raising them as they grow feral and completely reliant on the spirit. When the man’s twin brother is told of the girls and how they were rescued from the wild however he and his girlfriend take them in to try and form a family and allow the girls to recover. But Mama is never too far away, and she wants her girls back.

4. Bellatrix LeStrange – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

If you were to trace the lineage of several characters in the Harry Potter series you would see that a lot of them come from the same origins but have branched out so much throughout the years that it’s hard to see how they could ever be related. It’s already known that Bellatrix is related to Sirius Black, but she’s also related to other magical persons throughout the story by distant relations. The scariest thing about Bellatrix is that she’s completely insane and will go off the chain without a moment’s notice. And the fact that she killed Sirius only makes her an even worse character since she has almost no loyalty to anyone save the dark lord.

3. Maleficent – Maleficent

In the earliest version of Sleeping Beauty it was easy to see Maleficent as a villain without any redeeming qualities. But in the current version that exists it became possible to see her in a different light as she used to be a creature of the forest that wanted nothing more than to live free and to enjoy the life she’d been born into. But love does strange and terrible things to people sometimes and before anyone knew it Maleficent’s heart had turned cold and she became the villain that everyone remembered. Of course unlike the first movie she found a reason to actually care about Sleeping Beauty, no matter that she wanted to murder her father.

2. Hela – Thor: Ragnarok

Hela has been around in Norse mythology for quite some time but this seems like a new look that the MCU couldn’t wait to unveil. Not only is she updated for the current era but her power is on a level that not even Thor can contend with at his best. You kind of have to wonder though if she would be able to stand up to Stormbreaker the way she stood up to Mjolnir, especially if she was cut off from Asgard. Away from the seat of power it seems as though she might be just a little diminished, but it also seems likely as Odin’s first-born that she’d still be insanely powerful. Who knows, maybe she’ll come back somehow in another movie. She is the goddess of death after all.

1. Harley Quinn: Suicide Squad

Harley Quinn gets the top spot just based on the sheer insanity that she possesses and because of the guy she hangs around so often and calls Mr. J. She’s a certified nutcase and she knows it, and while she’s not the strongest or the most powerful person in the DC universe she’s still not a person you sell short since she is smart enough to outwit many people and is tough enough to put up one hell of a good fight. Given that she’s been around the Joker for so long her level of unpredictability is such that she doesn’t give a lot of hints before she whacks out. If she talks about the voices in her head and how they want her to kill everyone she’s usually just teasing.

Yes, female villains are just that scary sometimes.
