The word “anniversary” can mean different things at certain times. It can be happy like a marriage. It can be sad like what has happened around the world over the years. Though in this week’s episode of Madam Secretary, emotions run high as the country remembers the bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Mali. Henry meddles in teenage romance and helps Jason break up with Piper. I have a feeling that is not going to end well.
When Elizabeth expressed her concerns over lifting the sanctions put in place in Sudan, I agreed with her. With all that is going on, lifting said penalties should be the last thing on the to-do list. On the other hand, the United States wants to build a CIA base there. I sure hope that no hostilities will surface as this progresses.
Meanwhile, Henry helps Jason with the latter’s relationship problem with Piper. Apparently, there’s trouble in paradise when Jason informs his father that he feels that he’s being suffocated in the relationship. Henry tells his son that he needs to talk it out with Piper and not end things with her just because he’s feeling trapped. Kudos on the advice, Dr. McCord, but I facepalm at your attempt to assist. That, and for not listening to your wife when she warned you about meddling in teenage romances. Awkwardness aside, Jason took his father’s advice and talked with Piper, and the two lovebirds are as good as ever. Well, for now anyway, until the next whatever-gate comes up.
Back to the crisis at hand, President Dalton gives Elizabeth three days to look into President Qasim’s finances. Should she find anything suspicious, he will not give the go-ahead to build a CIA base in Sudan. Though when the fact that Gaafar El-Basha, the man responsible for the embassy bombing is still alive came into the light, the U.S. kept the sanctions in place for another year. They are also going through with the CIA base since it was the agency’s intel that helped find El-Basha. I chuckled at the irony that the SEALs ambushed him at his compound while he’s doing laps in the pool.
Final Thoughts:
My heart melted when I saw Waffles the beagle at the kennel at the bomb-sniffing canine training center (I think that’s what it’s called. Feel free to correct me). He is so cute I want to hug him! Daisy ended up adopting the puppy after seeing Elizabeth interact with it. Guess Matt’s words got to her after all.
I feel sorry for Peter. He went through a traumatic event that caused him to lose Lana, the woman he loved. Though technically, she’s his mistress as his wife and children are back in D.C. On the other hand, things weren’t peachy-keen at home, so I understand him wanting to pursue another relationship. Shame it was over before it progressed to something more.
Heartfelt Moment: The ending scene where Elizabeth told Peter about what happened on the day of the embassy attack. It must have been hard holding onto all that guilt after twenty years.
Best Quote Ever: “When it comes to avenging harm done to our people. We never forget.”
Funny Moment: Elizabeth laughing her head off at Henry’s awkward conversation with Piper’s mom, Regina. Yeah, it’s still amusing.
Loved the ending where the song My Funny Valentine started playing. A perfect end to an emotional episode.
