As the name states, the American Cinema Editors is a honorary society of movie editors, who are chosen for membership in said honorary society based on a number of factors. For example, there is the matter of their achievements as members of their chosen profession. Furthermore, there are the matters of their dedication to their chosen profession and their roles in helping others pursue the same path. Regardless, considering the select number of its membership, it should come as no surprise to learn that the Eddie Awards handed out by the American Cinema Editors for movie editing come with a fair amount of prestige.
First, it is important to note that the American Cinema Editors has not one but two awards for the best-edited feature film. One is intended for dramas, whereas the other is intended for comedies as well as musicals. Besides these two awards, there are also awards for the best-edited animated feature films as well as other best-edited projects. Like most awards, the Eddie Awards have seen a fair number of changes over the course of their existence, which is why some of the awards are much longer-running than others. For example, the award for the best-edited feature film started up in 1962 but wasn’t split into two until 2000. In contrast, the award for the best-edited TV series with a half-hour run-time as well as a number of others weren’t set up until 2015.
With that said, the two movies to win the American Cinema Editors’s awards for the best-edited feature films were Dunkirk for the drama category and I, Tonya for the comedy category. For those who are unfamiliar with those movies, Dunkirk was about the Dunkirk evacuation, which was when a collection of more than 800 vessels rescued more than 300,000 British soldiers and others who had become trapped because of the Battle of France. As a result, the Dunkirk evacuation is one of the most remembered moments of the Second World War by the British, who sometimes call it the Miracle of Dunkirk. As for I, Tonya, it is based on a real life event as well. To be exact, it is based on the life of Tonya Harding, someone who was once an Olympic-level figure skater but is best-known for her involvement with an attack on fellow figure skater Nancy Kerrigan. It was never proven in court that Harding had any involvement in organizing the attack, but she did plead guilty to conspiring to hinder the prosecution, which managed to convict both her ex-husband and her bodyguard. In the end, Harding didn’t receive a jail sentence, but she was banned from figure skating along with other penalties.
Otherwise, it is worth noting some of the other awards that were handed out as well. For example, Pixar’s Coco secured the award for the best-edited animated feature film. Meanwhile, Jane received the award for the best-edited feature documentary, which is interesting because it is one of the few works on Dr. Jane Goodall’s life that has ever received her personal approval. Of course, other awards were handed out as well, which might interest those with a curiosity of some sort about the field of movie editing.
