Originally appearing in “The Force Awakens,” many fans have been scouring the internet trying to find any possible clue or bit of information about the identity of the villain, Supreme Leader Snoke for the past two years. However, when the movie “The Last Jedi” was released, an apprehensive fan base leaned the truth — that this information was completely irrelevant. According to Rian Johnson — who was responsible for the script — he was not trying to intentionally avoid the origins of the character. He stated that there just wasn’t an opening to interject this story into the movie.
Why Wasn’t Snoke’s Backstory Added?
According to Johnson, in “The Last Jedi,” the story is similar to the original trilogy. If they had stopped one of the scenes to provide a monologue that explained who Snoke was, it would have completely interrupted the movie and flow of events. While it may have been interesting, and something fans appreciated, the goal of storytellers is to serve what the scene really needs to be in relation to the story.
What Do the Fans Have to Say?
In the weeks after the film was initially released, some of the main problems that fans had was not knowing about this character. This was true even though there was very little information about the Emperor Palpatine at the debut of the original “Star Wars” trilogy.
Even though the Supreme Leader’s backstory was not included in this movie, it doesn’t mean it is going to remain a mystery forever. In fact, Johnson has indicated that it could be a story told in the future, or be a complete movie delving into the history of the character and how he made is way to be such a powerful person in the “Star Wars” galaxy.
What is Known About Snoke Now?
What many fans find even more important than the backstory of Snoke is what the character meant to the character Kylo Ren. Just like viewers were only aware that Vader’s master as Palpatine, it was only necessary for the audience to understand that Snoke was Kylo’s master. There are some “Star Wars” fans who want every little story and character to be fully explained; however, there is nothing about the history of Snoke or his backstory that will change the events that unfolded in either “The Last Jedi,” or “The Force Awakens.” This information won’t impact any story line or event that occurs in the Skywalker Saga, which is why it was left out of the most recent film released.
What Do You Think?
If you are a fan of the old or new “Star Wars” movies, what’s your opinion? Do you demand a backstory, or are you okay not knowing everything? The fact is, with Disney taking over the “Star Wars” franchise, there is no limit to the movies that may be made. As a result, it may be sooner rather than later that all your questions about Snoke are answered.
