Five Things You Didn’t Know about Robert Eggers

There are so many people to keep track of nowadays that Robert Eggers kind of slipped by a lot of peoples’ notice. He’s a big contributor in Hollywood though with a modest filmography and he’s definitely capable of doing great things. He’s already proven that he has vision and can make a movie engaging and even frightening at the same time. Perhaps he needs a few more big pictures under his belt before he starts getting noticed, but as of now he’s still on the radar and that’s where most people want to be in order to become known.

Here are a few things you might not have known about Robert.

5. He’s been a production and costume designer.

Robert knows what it’s like to work behind the scenes as he’s done it for quite a while now. Despite not getting a lot of credit or any type of glory working behind the scenes is still laudable simply because without those folks that do such things the movie wouldn’t have any backbone and wouldn’t be able to run the way it should. In short, those people that operate behind the scenes are the real magic-makers.

4. His directorial debut was The Witch.

The first time he went solo as a director was on The Witch, a movie that is highly disturbing and yet brings back to mind the old bias against the supernatural and arcane. It is a hauntingly well-rendered movie and yet did not fair as well as many thought might happen at the box office. Eggers is no doubt unafraid to push forth his vision however, and that’s nice to see these days.

3. He plans to do an updated version of Nosferatu.

Did you ever see the 1922 version? You thought vampire movies today were creepy? They’ve got next to nothing on this old-time film. The characters eyes, fangs, and even just the creature’s shadow are creepy enough to give a person nightmares. And Eggers wants to bring it back to life in a newly updated version of the film. Huh boy, get ready for a few more nightmares.

2. He started out as a designer and director of theater.

Before making the leap to working with film crews he was already involved in the theater. This makes a lot of sense actually as it was probably a great experience and a way to really learn just how demanding the job would be. Actors aren’t the only ones that get their start in the theater obviously. Everyone has to learn somewhere and somehow when it comes to being among the best.

1. The Witch was based on his own script.

You don’t always hear about directors filming off of their own script unless they’re low budget and can’t afford the writing crews. But Eggers managed to go off of his own script for The Witch. It makes me wonder just what it looked like before he adapted it to the screen.

So at the moment not a lot is known about Robert Eggers, but he’s fairly young still. Give him time and he should be able to turn heads at some point with his work.
