Thor: Ragnarok is the most viewed trailer in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I made an argument last week that the main reason for this is because the movie used Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” to accompany it. Don’t get me wrong. The trailer happened to be fantastic. Cate Blanchett’s appearance was perfect. Jeff Goldblum looked like some wacked out moron but it fit perfectly. There was also an excellent blend of humor and action. Honestly it was the perfect trailer. But again, imagine they hadn’t used “Immigrant Song.” How good would the trailer have been? I bring this up because another movie trailer from 2009 would have easily been just as popular as Thor:Ragnarok had it been released today?
Remember the trailer for Terminator: Salvation? I think that even today this thing still gives me goosebumps. And the fact that it’s accompanied by Nine Inch Nails? Forget about it. Take Christian Bale, Bryce Howard, and Sam Worthington and re-release this exact same trailer today with the movie coming out in 2017 and I think you have an 8 figure viewed trailer without any issue.
This proves yet again however, that ultimately trailers don’t mean squat. Take the best shots and frames from a film, edit them together with the right music and you can make nearly any movie look like it’s going to be epic. Buyer beware.
