A Blast from the Past: H.L. Mencken’s Prophetic Words
It’s been a while since I last discussed Donald Trump, and I must admit, I’m experiencing a bit of withdrawal. However, I recently stumbled upon a fascinating tidbit that I simply couldn’t resist sharing. Back in 1926, a man named H.L. Mencken, an American journalist and satirist known as the “Sage of Baltimore,” penned a quote that seems to eerily foreshadow the current Trump administration. Here’s the quote:
“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be run by a downright moron.”
Mencken’s Words: A Reflection of Today’s Reality?
Ba dum ching! Some might argue that Mencken’s words could have predicted George Bush’s presidency, but I think we can all agree that Donald Trump poses a far greater threat. While none of these so-called “predictions” are set in stone, this quote does paint a strikingly accurate picture of the current state of America, don’t you think?
I have a feeling that H.L. Mencken and I would have gotten along famously.
