The Voice Season 8 Episode 20 Review: “Live Top 10 Eliminations”

The Voice

The Top 10 became the Top 8 on last night’s episode of The Voice, as two more contestants were sent packing. Like usual, they milked every second of suspense that they could with minute-long pauses between announcing results. For me, this has the opposite effect, as with each passing second, I care less and less whose name is going to be announced. My attention span isn’t that long, and I find it more annoying than anything. At least America got the results half right, sending home the weakest contestant along with someone who I thought would make it a bit father.

It was Pharrell and Adam’s turn this week to sing with their teams, with Pharrell, Sawyer, and Koryn taking the stage first. Arguably the best team left, these singers can take on any song and sound great. Later in the night, Adam, Joshua, and Deanna performed, showing just how big of a gap there is between the strongest and weakest team this season. Adam had bad luck from the start this year, and as we get closer to the end, it’s becoming even clearer that he won’t be winning this season.

In between the revealing of results, we also saw a performance from Reba and discovered that a few former coaches will be coming back to mentor next week. With all that out of the way, they finally got down to what really mattered: announcing the bottom three. Team Adam took a big hit with both Joshua and Deanna joining Team Christina’s Rob Taylor in the bottom of the pack. All three contestants had a chance to sing for their lives, with America voting via Twitter for who they wanted to remain in the competition.

After surviving the bottom three last week, Deanna Johnson gave it her all again in her final performance, but this time it just wasn’t enough. Adam made the same passionate plea that he made last week for her, telling America that if they had ever felt nervous or insecure that they should keep her around. In the end, Deanna just wasn’t strong enough of a performer to make it into the Top 8.

For his final performance, Rob Taylor picked a song that did nothing to show off his range or his ability to connect emotionally. He’s got talent, but for whatever reason, America just hasn’t connected with him and this song choice was his final kiss of death. At least he got to go out on a high note with his coach, as Christina gave a heartfelt speech that brought him to tears.

Luckily for Adam, who otherwise would have no one left in the competition, America used their save on Joshua Davis. There’s nothing especially interesting about Joshua, but he did come out and showed America why they liked him in the first place. Unless he does something truly surprising and different next week, he’ll probably be going home, but at least Team Adam will live to see one more week.
