The Originals Season 2 Episode 12 Review: “Sanctuary”

The Originals

Digging deeper into the Mikaelson family tree is proving to be the smartest decision yet on The Originals.  Amidst the typical werewolf vs. witch vs. vampire tensions, the introduction of Freya really stood out the most in last night’s episode.

“Sanctuary” was evenly split between three different storylines, but the most intriguing for me was the witch asylum.  With little help from Cassie, Rebekah planned to escape by channeling the power of the supposedly dead witch in the attic.  Little did she know that Cassie would rat her out and Freya would come to her rescue.  At this point Freya hadn’t reveal her true identity to her little sister yet, but she did plant some freaky nightmarish dreams into her head that made Rebekah feel like she shared some kind of connection with her.  Once Freya broke the spells that entrapped them in this prison, she told Rebekah the truth.  Before going their separate ways, Freya warned Rebekah that she’ll be paying their brothers a visit soon, and she expects them to be on their best behavior.  I can’t wait for that.  Even though Finn was the only sibling who would have memories of her, she’ll surely intimidate even Klaus.  Now I also have to wonder where Freya is going first if she’s not heading home to New Orleans with Rebekah.  Maybe to contact their Aunt Dahlia?  There’s a lot of potential paths Freya’s character could go down and a lot more tension she could bring to all of the current family drama.

The second most interesting part of the episode revolved around Klaus and his mission to stop Hayley from going through with her wedding rituals if it meant putting their daughter in more danger.  She believes she can trust Jackson with the knowledge that Hope is still alive but Klaus isn’t quite on board with that.  Not surprisingly, he acts quick to snap Hayley’s neck so that he can literally execute Jackson without interference.  Jackson didn’t stand a chance against Klaus, who normally wouldn’t have stopped to have a conversation with his prey before.  If Klaus was truly set on killing Jackson he wouldn’t have wasted so much time tossing him around so much.  That gave Hayley enough time to recover, and she really hit the nail on the head of the problem with Klaus.  He’s the threat to their daughter.  Not Jackson or the wolves, who could all unite to protect her as one of their own after the wedding empowers them.  Klaus is the one who burnt bridges and made enemies all over the world.  It’s the very fact that Hope will always be his daughter that will keep her in constant danger.

Lastly, Finn tries and fails to get any information from Marcel about Klaus’ darkest secret.  The reason Marcel can’t answer even the simplest question of how the baby died is exactly the giveaway that Finn was looking for.  Marcel was compelled to forget this imaginary death because Klaus’ daughter is still alive.  Now Finn will compromise Marcel and the rest of the vampires (minus Josh) to help him find her.  Hopefully, Freya reunites with her closest sibling before he makes any stupid moves to hurt Hope.  It’s unclear what Freya would do if she learns about the baby, too, but for now, she seems like she’s more level-headed and reasonable like Rebekah.

Finn did the viewers a huge favor when he locked Kol into his current body, thereby preventing him from jumping into someone else to escape the death he promises him.  Instead of killing his brother right on the spot, he sends him on his way to say his goodbyes and promises his days are numbered.  I’m fine with – and even grateful for – the body lock but the curse is a little excessive.  Come on. Daniel Sharman has been a blessing this season, and he cannot be killed off.  Davina has to be able to save him and I can’t wait to watch every second of these two together.  It’ll also give them something to focus on other than their weak plan to kill Klaus. Seriously, I don’t even know why they’re bothering to defeat Klaus.  They aren’t even on his radar at the moment so they should leave him alone.

Looking ahead for the rest of the season is equal parts exciting and terrifying.  Freya’s loyalties seem to lie with her family, but she doesn’t even know half their story yet.  Or does she?  Either way, she’s been lying in wake for a century and now for some unknown reason she’s back.  Is Dahlia soon to follow?
