Holidays on The Middle are always great! This Halloween episode was no exception. With Brick’s social awkwardness and Sue’s hopelessly eternal optimism showcased, Mike actually had the funniest comments this week. He may not have had his own storyline for a few seasons now (and when does he ever go to work?), but he spoke the hilarious truth when he commented to Frankie that they should clean up their basement for Brick and Sue to live in when they’re older.
For the first time all season, we actually see Axl at college! He’s being hazed onto the college’s football team, and he has to do all sorts of silly things like hop on one foot any time a senior texts him. It was nice to see that he’s making a friend at college, because his roommate is still glued to his computer screen like he was in the season premiere. All through high school we only ever saw Axl with his two friends Sean and Darrin, so it’s about time the writers gave him a new friend!
Back home in Orson, Frankie buys gross candy like licorice menorahs so they don’t eat it all before Halloween. These are the Hecks we’re talking about, so of course they did eat all of it before the trick-or-treaters start knocking. I was cracking up because everyone can probably relate to having to turn off all your lights and pretend you’re not home once you run out of candy on Halloween night.
Brick confesses to developing a crush on a girl in his class. Surprised that he might actually be overcoming his strange behaviors, his family pushes him to ask her to go to the Halloween dance with him. Much to everyone’s amazement, she said yes! This is Brick we’re talking about, so his choice of costume is that of a bookmark. It turns out Frankie was right to be worried, because Brick was so nervous when the girl even talked to him at the dance that he got dizzy and passed out.
Sue has her fellow Wrestlerettes over for a sleepover for some team bonding. They decide to do a séance, and Sue tries to contact the spirit of Christopher Columbus because “he discovered America you guys. I just love America so much!” I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I just love Sue Heck so much! She swears that she saw the ghost of the Santa Maria. When she tells her parents about it, they first question why she would even think to channel Christopher Columbus. Her hilarious response: “I’m 16, Mom. I don’t know a lot of dead people.”
Sue starts telling everyone about it, including her teachers at school. Frankie and Mike are rightfully concerned that she is going to be labeled as crazy, but Sue won’t listen to them when they tell her to dial it down and keep it to herself. Mike pulls out a story of when he was younger and woke up to his dead grandmother sitting on the end of his bed. She told him everything would be okay, but Mike still denies the possibility that it could have been her ghost. He’s never even told Frankie about this before because he knows it sounds insane. Sue just sees this as another example of the supernatural and keeps her optimism high.
Cut to the middle of the night, and Mike can’t sleep. He goes into the living room and sees the shadow of what appears to be a ship cross over the wall, exactly how Sue described it. It was probably just headlights from a passing car possibly obstructed by tree branches or something. Frankie’s voiceover, reiterating Sue’s message that “anything is possible” was a cute and sweet ending to another classic Heck Halloween. I can’t wait to see what their Thanksgiving is like in a few weeks!
