Well, it had to happen eventually, right? Things just seemed entirely too good to be true and we all knew that sooner or later we would get a filler episode. And that’s exactly what last night’s “Heartbreak Hotel” was. For the first time this season, I found myself completely uninterested in a Castle episode and I just wanted it to end. It wasn’t bad, per se, really. It was just… I am not even going to say boring because it had its moments, but it was just… not interesting, maybe?
The victim of the week was a casino owner, which led the boys – including Castle – to do a little investigating in Atlantic City. Meanwhile, Beckett stayed behind in New York with Gates breathing down her neck to see how well she worked without her shadow. It had potential. It really did, but I guess the way the episode was handled didn’t really work out. I admit I laughed out loud with the boys dressed as Elvis and I actually liked Alexis’ storyline for once, but that was just it. Moments. And those were not enough to save the episode.
I really liked the Gates/Beckett scenes and it made me warm up to the new Captain just a little bit more and it was refreshing to see Beckett standing up for Castle. Other than that, it was just a weak episode all around.
That said, can we please talk about the promo for the next episode – which will only air in two weeks – and how awesome it looks? I am so glad they finally dealing with Beckett’s PTSD and “Kill Shot” looks like it will be downright amazing. I am honestly counting the seconds until November 21. You can already check out the promotional photos for “Kill Shot” here and the promo below.

The directing was episodic, disjointed, no real flow to it at all and yet, had we not been spoiled by a string of absolutely fabulous episodes this story might have seemed okay. And worst of all, that trailer for Nov 21, killed all hope that we may have looked more favorably upon it after having time to digest the story. Heartbreak Hotel was a victim of a stellar season four, thus far.
It was a really bad episode. Castle and beckett make this show and if you separate them you get the boredom that we experienced last night.
It was not a bad episode. It was just less than normal.
Agree – this was a BAD episode – probably the worst of four seasons! Beckett and Castle are the show…..
Nyah, it wasn't a bad episode; like Lame says, we've been spoilt with some amazing episodes in this season so far. It's good on its own, but nothing compared to what we've had. I enjoyed it, I even laughed out loud at parts. Disliked Gates for her suggesting that Castle is holding Beckett back; calling him a "distraction". That's going to be interesting, with everyone on the team wanting them together and Gates wanting them separate.
As for the promo, oh my gods! That looks amazing, and again, I echo Lame's comment about it spoiling "Heartbreak Hotel". Seeing that is obviously going to reflect badly on this episode. Really, though, it's going to be amazing. Something big is going to go down between Castle and Beckett in two weeks' time. Seriously. You can just tell. Seriously, it's going to bring it all back; slam into the forefront of her mind. There's no way she's going to be able to pretend that she doesn't remember any longer.
The fallout alone is going to be amazing and possibly dire.
I didn't mind the episode, sure it wasn't stellar, but it wasn't bad. I thought it was funny and just what was needed in between 407 and 409.
To me, the mistake the show is making right now, and it's been seen for a few episodes this season, is that they are splitting Castle and Beckett up too much. How much of that is plot arcs or how much of that is extraneous off-set issues I have no idea. But Castle and Beckett are the core of the show and keeping changing up that pairing is a mistake.
I think I'm also the only person who isn't already giving Ms Katic an Emmy off the back of a thirty second promo. Am I looking forward to 409, yes I am. Am I looking forward to all the fanwank that is about to happen because once more Stana Katic is given the meaty episode and the rest of the cast have to sit back and take it, no I'm very much not.
Juli, I see where you're coming from, but these episodes show the strengthening of the bond between all four members of Becketts' team. Think about it in those two episodes each gave much more than was called for, to benefit the team member in need, tightening the bond.
Don't tell me, you are one of the insane fans who want the show to forget all about the other cast and just rename it 'Beckett' and give her 'every award eva'.
Last night was a RARE episode to showcase the guy's, being guys, away from work. It was cute and it was fun and I enjoyed it because we see a dynamic we are very rarely given. The boys. All three of them. Without Beckett's curbing influence.
But oh, I forgot, Beckett isn't allowed not to be the centre of the show, right?
I so glad to read that. Istarted to think That I was the only to enjoy the bond between the guys and to are a little tired of Beckett (and Stana Katic) having all the goood stories, all the major powerful scene.
Don't get me wrong, I love Beckett (and Katic) but I think that the show isn't about her alone. THere"s a team and it's good to see them work together. I mean in the first seasons, you could think that Esposito and Ryan could ask "who's this guy again who follow beckett everywhere ?"
I totally agree, I think that yes, this episode maybe wasn't up to par even to the normal filler episodes but it's great ot see just the guys together, without beckett, and to see just beckett without castle by her side you know. Plus i think it was the right time for a filler, and this episode seemed so bad because we really had come off one of the best episodes ever, but i am so looking forward to the next ep. so looking forward.
Okay, really? The fans you’re referring to aren’t annoying Facebook girls. Try can spell, and I don’t think they would ever say something like ‘every award eva’.
But other than that, yes, I find it quite annoying how people hate these episode because “Omg, there was hardly any Caskett! Sob sob!” It was nice. It was different and kind of refreshing. I don’t know why people found it this boring actually. I quite enjoyed it.
On meaty episodes, well, there was 4×04 in which Ryan had the central role. Also, there’s apparently going to be an episode concerning Castle’s birth father sometime in the near future. I mean, come on. She is the one with the PTSD here, they can’t just leave that storyline dangling there. It would make no sense!
The really good news is TPTB finally gave Dr. Worff [the psychiatrist] an official name. Hopefully that means we'll be seeing more of him, and learning more of Becketts' feelings as a consequence.
Come on AWM, keep the Dr. in the loop and the rest of us informed.
The good doctors' name is Carter Burke. Sorry I left that out.
I think the problem is that it almost felt like an S1 vibe between Castle and Beckett before he ran off, nothing that acknowledged the new level the last ep should have taken them to. I was less annoyed than some, but yeah, basically bored and some of the details really irritated me. Nathan's weight is getting really out of hand, not that the fishing jacket or the Elvis-on-the-brink-of-drug-induced-death costume helps very much that. Beckett on the other hand looked ballerina-thin and while the surgical scar is lower, with that top, shouldn't we be able to see the gunshot entry wound? Alexis' story was ridiculous considering that last year Castle was advertising his building as secure when Beckett was being hunted by a serial killer — what the doormen/guards/buzzer system/whatever is suddenly allowing hordes of random drunken teenagers access? And Gates, while I've been neutral and willing to like her till now, just came across as that incompetent boss who's trying to big herself up by telling the experienced folk how to do their job. There were lots of good possibilities in the story, but the actual writing was just so lackluster that nothing much came across and the direction didn't seek out any of those wonderful little character moments from any of them to brighten it up.
Not the worst of the season, but prolly right behind 4×05. At least this one didn't piss me off. And next week looks fantastic, so.
That is one of my minor gripes. A major surgery without scars. Everyone should be so lucky. My other gripe is the world's worse hitman. The guy had Beckett's sternum in his cross hairs and manage to hit her on the lower left side of her chest, below the lowest rib. Where did they find this guy, at a carnival, shooting bbs' at the rotating duckies.
First time in 60+ episodes I actually turned the TV off during the show and went to bed early. From start to finish it didn't go past 'blah'…and that's with generous consideration for the heinous Elvis get-ups.
Can someone help, I can't read or speak Portuguese. Know anybody, Luc?
Google translate is your friend, doesn't do a half bad job of translating it.
An interesting point in the episode for me was the fact that Beckett didn't really contact Castle or he her. When there was contact, it was mostly through Ryan or Esposito, which I found kind of strange.
Thanks, but that would entale my having to do more typing than I'd like. As a one time comcenter spec with a max 45wpm, I might lose interest before I'd be done.
Lmao at lame’s “rotating duckies” analogy :)
Excuse me for going way off topic, but I was wondering about 4.10. We've heard about "kill shot", and Ryan's wedding and even the Mayors indiscretions, but absolutely nothing of "cuffed", or is that the one mentioned months ago in an interview about the DD being bound together? Can you fill me in on a synopsis.
We don't have a synopsis yet, but from what has been released (which is pretty much zero information) is that Castle and Beckett will be cuffed to each other for most of the episode.
Thanks Luc [spanish pronunciation, for those wondering], I guess that was the episode I read about months ago. Gawd, that does sound intriguing.
Our hyperbolic friend Ausiello, posted his spoiler of "Cuffed". Reads like its' going to be a gut buster, funny episode.
stana (beckett) looks old this season. I hate to say it but the first couple of seasons she was hip looking and healthy looking. Now she looks sunken in and looks like she has aged 10 years!! And clothes this season are just not what we were all use to. She seems to be less fiesty as well. I don't know what is going on but someone needs to help her start eating and get out from whatever stress she is under. She really looks different. Hopefully someone will talk to her.
