I’m just taking a guess here, but you’d have to think that Haddaway must have been completely outraged when Saturday Night Live made a mockery of his song with their Night at the Roxbury duo. And then of course the song was later used in the movie and now it’s pretty much the theme song for making a mockery of just about anything.
However, I’ll also venture to take a guess that to this day he must have be pretty thankful considering that was his only hit and that’d he’d be making money off of it for the rest of his life (assuming he didn’t much up anything in his contract about royalties). In 2008 the song was was featured in a Pepsi commercial. Today it’s used in sports stadiums around the country and then there’s any reference to Night at the Roxbury. While the royalties probably aren’t what they used to be, I’m sure they’re not bad.
Despite its embarrassing correlation to head bopping, it’s an awesome song to dance around to when you’re alone. Or when you’re in the middle of crossing the street. Whichever. Let’s brighten up your day a little bit more with Haddaway’s “What is Love.”
