5 Actors Who Were Left With Permanent Injuries After Filming a Movie

One of the most beautiful things about movies is that they make near-death experiences look so easy. We watch actors take punches, crash cars, and jump off tall buildings like it’s nothing. Then we watch them walk it off for the next scene. Except sometimes they don’t.

These five stars didn’t just get injured for real while the cameras were rolling; the injuries they sustained stuck around long after the shooting wrapped. We’re talking skull fractures, busted eardrums, and a host of other injuries doctors couldn’t fully fix. Let’s find out what actually happened to them.

1. George Clooney: Syriana (2005)

George Clooney picked up an Oscar for his excellent portrayal of Bob Barnes in Syriana. But that shiny statuette came at a huge cost. During a torture scene, the veteran actor tore his dura mater (the membrane wrapped around the spinal cord) and started leaking spinal fluid through his nose. The whole thing sounds like something out of a horror movie, but it was a real, scary experience for Clooney. He endured a nine-hour surgery, and the doctors spent most of it trying to patch the tear. And even after all that, he still deals with back pain and migraines that make him want to crawl into a dark closet. He’s gone on record to say that the recovery messed with his head almost worse than his back.

2. Jackie Chan: Armour of God (1986)

Jackie Chan in Armour of God

The knowledge that Jackie Chan does his own stunts stopped being a fun piece of trivia a long time ago. In fact, it’s basically his whole brand as an actor. But that reputation almost got him killed at one point. During the production of Armour of God, he nailed a jump from a ledge onto a tree branch on the first try. But being Jackie, he wanted a second, more perfect take. That was a mistake.

The branch snapped; he fell about 15 feet headfirst onto some rocks, blood poured from his ears, and a piece of his skull got pushed into his brain. An emergency eight-hour brain surgery followed, and to this day, he’s got a plastic plate holding his head together. He was back at work a week later (like that surprised anyone), but he never recovered full hearing in his right ear.

3. Linda Hamilton: Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

Many film lovers still regard that elevator shootout scene in Terminator 2 as one of the best action sequences of all time, but it cost Linda Hamilton more than most people realize. She and Arnold Schwarzenegger were firing blanks at the T-1000 in a cramped metal box, and somewhere in the chaos of resetting for another take, she forgot to pop her earplugs back in. When the guns went off, the bang was so loud she dropped to her knees thinking she’d been shot. Nobody noticed. So she sucked it up and kept rolling like a trooper. That tiny slip cost her permanent hearing loss in one ear, and for a scene that lasted barely ninety seconds, that’s a bad trade.

4. Uma Thurman: Kill Bill (2003)

This particular story gets uglier the deeper one digs into it. While shooting Kill Bill, Uma Thurman was told to drive a convertible down a sandy, curvy road in Mexico. It was a stunt she felt was unsafe, probably because the seat wasn’t screwed down properly, and the vehicle had been modified from a stick shift to an automatic. She voiced her objections to the crew before they even rolled the camera. But they dismissed her misgivings, and the car spun out, smashed into a palm tree, and left her with a concussion, a neck brace, and knee problems that still affect her.

She thought she’d never walk again after the crash, and straight-up accused Quentin Tarantino of trying to kill her. Then, to rub salt in the injury, Miramax sat on the crash footage for years, refusing to hand it over unless she agreed not to hold them responsible for future suffering. When she eventually got her hands on it and posted it herself, the whole story blew back up online, and honestly, good for her, because that kind of cover-up deserves to be called out.

5. Bruce Willis: Die Hard (1988)

Die Hard fans have probably watched this scene a dozen times without thinking much of it. Bruce Willis’s John McClane fires his gun through a conference table, cracks a one-liner, and walks away as if nothing happened. What these fans don’t see is Willis losing most of his hearing in his left ear right then and there. The crew packed extra-hot blanks for that shot, and Willis was crammed under the table with the gun going off inches from his head.

They even put Plexiglass around him to protect him from shell casings, which actually made the sound worse in that tiny space. He’s worn a hearing aid for years without fans realizing it. He later said in a 2007 interview with The Guardian, “I have a tendency to say, ‘Whaaa?’” a story his family has since confirmed.
