Powerless Season 1 Episode 3 Review: “Sinking Day”

“Sinking Day” is only the third episode of Powerless and it got dark fast! We went from overly chipper Emily to jaded to the extreme. Did I miss something?

I guess there was a bit of a time jump, and Emily has helped the company a lot. Van obviously takes advantage of her, and I can’t even hate him for it, because Alan Tudyk is hilarious.

There were plenty of great lines from Ron this week, too. We learned that he is from Atlantis, yeah, that Atlantis, which ensues a “I thought you were from Atlanta.” He replies, “No, that’s Donald Glover, and it might be racist that you said that.” There were a few lines referencing last year’s election, as well. Nicely topical and funny.

We also met a local superhero, the Olympian, and almost met Aquaman. I trust Powerless will not reveal any of the big heroes from the Justice League since the DC movie is set to release soon.

The entire subplot where Ron tries to prove that Alex, the accountant, is also the Olympian was strange. Especially because in any real office they would have so many HR problems.

Emily admits that she may have some tricks to learn from Van after all, which seems ridiculous when you even think about Tudyk’s character. I wonder what plans the writers have for him.

Overall, the episode had a nice message, but felt oddly dark for this new comedy. The ending clip of Van and Emily singing was charming, and I wouldn’t mind seeing more of that sort of thing. Until next week!
