10 Things You Didn’t Know about “The Notebook”

Romance doesn’t truly know rich or poor it would seem, but in The Notebook young Noah is about as poor as they get, and despite being genuinely attracted to and in love with Allie, her parents simply don’t approve and will not accept him. When he goes off to WWII that is presumably the end of the relationship, but when he returns things get heated once again, especially since Allie is engaged to another man and is about to marry him. Noah returns to her life and things get very heated as he continues to expand upon his passion for her. True love doesn’t know time, riches, or how to stop.

Here are a few things about the movie you might not have known.

10. Ryan Gosling was an unknown.

He’d been a part of the Mickey Mouse Club but apart from that hadn’t done anything worthy of note up until this point.

9. Brittney Spears wanted the role of Allie.

Apparently her audition went just fine and Gosling thought that she’d done okay. Of course the two had met in the MMC before.

8. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams didn’t get along during filming.

They would actually have shouting fits that the crew and cast had to endure since they just could not agree on anything.

7. Gosling apprenticed with a cabinet maker for a couple of months before shooting the film.

He did this to build a bit of muscle and get into the part of Noah, who was a carpenter.

6. A lot of Rachel McAdams’ wardrobe was from the 1940’s.

The reason she has no shoes in the passionate scene where they kiss in the rain is that they dissolved. A lot of her clothing was really fragile.

5. The older version of Allie is the director’s mother.

It’s kind of interesting how director’s tend to work their family into their films every now and again.

4. Gosling built the dining room table that appears in the film.

You kind of have to think that prepping for a role would allow actors to pick up certain skills that they might want to keep.

3. Gosling and McAdams actually dated after the film was over.

They stayed together for a while and then eventually split. Fans would actually berate Gosling for splitting up with McAdams.

2. The film won Best Kiss at the MTV music awards.

For all that they couldn’t stand each other on the set the two still managed to make the romantic scenes believable and had people thinking that they had really fallen for each other or at least had the kind of chemistry that was just really impressive.

1. Gosling had to put on weight and then lose it for various parts of his role.

He had to be a young, skinny kid in some scenes and a bigger, burlier man in others. This had to take somewhat of a toll on him after a while even though he didn’t really go to extremes.

It’s funny to think that in a romantic movie like this that the two lead actors really didn’t like each other, but then fell for each other after it was over.
