Five Excellent Airplane Cockpit Scenes in Movies

Have you ever noticed that when the cockpit of an airplane is shown in a movie that things have, or are about to, take a serious turn for the worst? It definitely makes the feeling a lot more serious and even dramatic when the camera is in the pilot’s seat or the co-pilot’s and you’ve got to wonder just what’s going to happen next. In some cases you might wonder “what now?” since everything leading up to that point has been so traumatic that getting to the cockpit should be the culmination of the action. But in some cases just getting to the cockpit is the beginning of the trouble. It seems like entering the cockpit in a movie is just flat out trouble waiting to happen, at least a good percentage of the time.

There’s nothing like seeing trouble up close and personal.

5. Airplane!

This old school spoof movie is one of the greatest ever made in the opinion of many people and is sheer hilarity most of the way through. It also features some very famous individuals that were making a pretty good run at film careers back in the day. A lot of people born within the past couple of decades might not get a lot of the humor in this film, but it’s still one of the absolute best.

4. Air Force One

Sad to say some people have even forgotten about this movie even though it was one that a lot of people loved back when it was released. The president and Air Force One, along with everyone on it, have been taken hostage. The president was supposedly ejected from the plane in an escape pod, but in reality he stayed behind and eventually takes the fight to the terrorists.

3. Flight

Pilots are not supposed to show up to work drunk. I repeat: PILOTS are NOT supposed to show up to WORK, DRUNK. The big argument here though is that if he didn’t and he’d tightened up there’s a good chance that a lot of people would have died due to the pilot’s inaction caused by nerves and/or the inability to just roll with whatever came.

2. Lord of War

When you’re an arms dealer and you’re flying a plane-load of guns, ammunition, and RPG’s you’re basically flying a bomb that’s ready to explode if Interpol insists on firing off a few warning shots. In such situations it’s time to land and get rid of as much stuff as you possibly can in order to avoid being charged for illegal munitions and possibly shipped off to a third-world prison.

1. Castaway

It’s a standard run for a FedEx employee, something that he does all the time. But when things divert from the plan and the instrumentation takes a wacky turn for the worse he’s suddenly looking at a wide and suddenly very close view of the water as it comes rushing up to meet the plane in a jarring explosion as metal buckles and the force of the impact knocks him almost to the back of the plane.

See? Very few good things happen when they show the cockpit in a movie.
